Illinois is the #2 corn producer in America. Among its other produce is grapes for its vineyards, pumpkins, popcorn and geen beens for national brands, apples, oats, wheat and rye for flour, summer garden vegetables and many items not for human consumption - such as forange. .
Since Chicago has many Asian and Mexican style restaurants if folly to think Chicago restaurant owners do not buy locally - just as Philly does. I don't know that either state grows rice. You can also buy Amonium Bicarbonate for baking - that is made in Chicago, too.
As to who has the best or the most produce - I have no idea, I that Illinois soybeans go into a products and they can be found in salads, too. And I found five farms in Illinois that bulk produce local fresh vegetables - I believe two are in the Chicago suburbs.
Does it make Chicago a winner over Philly?.. it would take a lot o heavy research and a lot of phone calls to determine which actually grows locally.
I'm not sure that Chicago easliy "wins" since there is some difficulty finding decent varieties of produce in some areas of Chicago. Each region is going to have a better this or that fruit/vegetable.
But the midwest region is certainly one of the best if not the best for sure. You are wrong on one thing though. Community/neighborhood gardening in the United States predates Chicago's existence. Wading pool gardens became popular out of Chicago, but Chicago did not pioneer the concept of neighborhood gardening. That was brought over from Europe and the colonies had such gardens before we were even a country. Anyway, urban farms. Gross.
who cares, gimme the italian beef or a cheese steak
