miami dade had 248 homicides for 2009, compared to 259 in 08.
Dade County stays averaging 240 to 260 homicides a year. I know Palm Beach County had 107 homicides last year, but I don't know how much it had this year. And Broward County had 118 homicides last year.
There were 6 reported murders in Tijuana yesterday (01/04), including a 17 year old San Diego High School student who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I will try to find out how many murders for the year Tijuana has so far.

that was in 2007, it had like 80 or 90 something in 08 unless you mean 09 as last year.
In raw numbers, Chicago is on its way to being Murder Capital of the U.S.
Chicago is a war zone compared to NYC or LA.
PARTS of the city certainly are insane, but I wouldn't really call the entire city one by any means.
There was a detailed breakdown done by community area and it found around 25% of the people in the city live in areas with 75% of the homicides. Likewise 75% of the city deals with 25% of the homicides. This is the main reason more isn't done - most people aren't living in areas with insane murders. Many of the most dense areas of the city have very few murders.
The continuous area including Lincoln Park/Lakeview/Uptown/Edgewater/Near North/Loop/South Loop has around 385,000 people, and had 6 murders last year - most of them actually on the edge of that strip, two were in industrial areas along the river. There are many other areas on the north and northwest side of the city that don't see any homicides.
It's all the crazy and or unlucky people who are living in much less populated areas on the west and south sides that see a ton of murders. That's the reason many of those areas cleared out in population years ago.

The city is roughly 30% white, 30% hispanic, 35% black and 5% asian.
This just came in. There were 29 murders in the previous 24 hours in Juarez ending I believe this morning. This was just confirmed. That would put it up to 60 for the year already.

The city needs to tackle the problem head on and not just classify it as a "problem for those people in the ghettos." The murder rate for the 700,000 people in that 25% is 49.12 per 100,000 people. If those neighborhoods where 700,000 residents currently live were to form their own city (a major city at that with 700,000 residents), it would easily be the most dangerous city in the country per capita.
25% is actually a lot of the city to be effected by such crime. Thank heavens the city saw an large drop in homicides this year though. That progress needs to continue. The city can't make excuses that say "well 75% of us are doing great, and 25% of us have drive by shootings!! Isn't life grand!"
