My hometown of Buffalo, NY:

The misconception: It snows constantly
The truth: The peculiar phenomenon known as Lake Effect Snow does usually happen 5 to 10 times every winter, but lake effect storms are very localized, so they don't affect the whole area at once. The snow bands are typically only about 5 miles wide, and the prevailing winds usually place the the snow bands in the sparsely populated areas south of the city, where the ski slopes are. Lake effect snow usually ends by mid-January because the surface of Lake Erie freezes and cuts off the "fuel" for storms.

The misconception: That the temperatures are brutally cold
The truth: There are cold snaps, but typical mid-winter temperatures are in the 30s, generally the same as other nearby cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Periods of temperatures above freezing and into the mid-to-upper 40s are very common in winter. Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis have much colder winters.

The misconception: Buffalo is close to NYC
The truth: It's a 7 hour drive

Wow, I knew it was far, but not THAT far! That would be going to another state in many parts of the country.

I see why Buffalo looks to Toronto rather than NYC. Toronto is just 2 hrs away, right?

Door-to-door is 7-8 hours depending on your specific destination in NYC, but you could drive from the Eastern suburbs of Buffalo to the Hudson river in about 6 hours, then spend another hour in traffic within NYC. Downtown Toronto is only about 90 minutes away from downtown Buffalo.

Hometown: Chicago Il (well I had to move to the burbs recently but still real close)

Stereotypes/misconceptions

we all like the Blues Brothers
we are all clannish
we treat other cities around the midwest like dirt and constantly pine for Chicago
we are fat
we are rude
we wear sunglasses every day
we are thuggy, weasily, and out to make a quick buck and rip you off
we are bad drivers
we are all sport crazed
we only wear black, that way if a funeral comes up, we dont have to change clothes
we all wear jeans everywhere we go
our city smells like f a r t s

Unfortunately, there is a little bit of truth in all stereotypes!

Its cold year round here.

Everyone here talks like the actors in Fargo (The Movie)

The city has a pretty good rep as I understand it, so there isn't too much to complain about.

New York City:

Everyone is rude, loud, stuck up, obnoxious, and in your face.

Its a Northern city with arctic Winters (winters are comparable to the upper-South).

The city is 100% safe.

The city is 100% dangerous.

Everyone is always in a rush, life is like a rat race.

The city is 100% urban (there's rural areas with swamps lol).

Anyone who's anybody takes the subway which supposedly goes everywhere.

I can go on all day with this list.

FORT WORTH:

Myth: It is just a big suburb of Dallas.
Truth: Fort Worth is its own city.

St Louis misconception:
Extremely dangerous, thanks to some report that came out last year (?) ranking us the most dangerous city in America.

There are parts that are dangerous. Most of it isn't much different than any other city.

Milwaukee:

Fat- actually one of the fittest cities in the US.

Laverne& Shirley, Happy Days, Jeffery Dahmer- no we don't talk, look or act like any of them.

Crappy Beer- We have a ton of craft breweries and a great beer culture here.

Crime ridden- 3 years in a row of drastic crime drops and no longer on list of top 30 most dangerous
cities

Mullet town- we don't have mullets here, we are a lot more fashionable than people think we are.

No nightlife- We actually have a great nightlife scene.

Fargo Accent- No one talks like that here and I mean NO ONE!

We are jealous of Chicago- some people are but most are not

Nothing to do here- So wrong! There is a ton of things to do here.
