Hawaii - Obviously
Alaska - Obviously
Louisana - Cajun/Creole Culture
Texas - No other state offers a more variety of cities
California - Amazing and diverse landscape
That does about sound right - although, IMHO CA would be #3.
Hawaii - only state completely surrounded by ocean, has active volcanoes, beaches, mountains, so much rain, yet sun & surf...
Alaska - so large, beautiful, wild...
California - such diverse geography; sun and sand to mountains to dessert...
In the lower 48 I will have to give the nod to Louisiana and New Mexico. Louisiana has the unique Cajun culture associated with it. New Mexico has the unique architecture, and Native American influences. Drive the High road to Taos sometime and I think most will agree!!
I have to say, I don't really understand how New Jersey has more votes than New Mexico and Louisiana...
I think because New Jersey has so much diversity in geography and culture packed into a much smaller area than either of those two states.
That alone might not make the statement true; however, there's no one right answer here--it's a matter of opinion and what one considers unique.
Hawaii is unique in that it's an island in the Pacific. Alaska is unique in that it's got so much real wilderness and touches the Arctic circle. You could probably come up with something for almost every state--so what do Louisiana and New Mexico have that no other state does that would make them unique? That is the question.
Louisiana has the Mississippi delta and the unique culture of New Orleans. I'm not sure about New Mexico--I know they have beautiful mountains, but so do other western states. I have never been there, and in my mind I tend to think of New Mexico as similar to Arizona, the latter of which I've only been to in the corner part with the Grand Canyon that you can drive to from Las Vegas.
Even Maine is unique in that it gets the sunrise before any other part of the US, and it has the only ski slope in the country from which you can see the ocean.

here is why NM is unique-
its a purple state
catholic is majority,2nd is Southern Baptist
east/west/north/south parts of the state are different and offer different culture and feel
deserts and palm trees to forests and skiing to plains and country living
has its own cuisine(New Mexican)
has its own music (New Mexican)
borders a different country
is a minority majority state
has its own architecture(old adobe buildings)
has unique cities like Santa Fe and Taos
culture of many Native American tribes,Spanish,Mexican, and Anglos
one of the largest states but one of the most rural
Louisiana and New Mexico each have their own culture, cuisine and music and no other state has that......excluding Hawaii and Alaska. Thats what makes them truely uniques, lots of states have different landscapes but you need something else to make it truely unique.
New Mexico and Louisiana have lots in common for being two tottaly different states.
