Hello, I am looking for my next place to live and have narrowed it down to these four places. I am looking for a family friendly area with activities for a 2 year old and 7 year old. We love outdoor activities and want to live close to beaches. Safe schools, low crime, walkable areas- not worried about job market as I am self employed with a portable career. Which place do you like best?

Being from SC, I'm more familiar with the first two options. Mt. Pleasant has safe schools and low crime, but it's pure suburbia (the new urbanist neighborhood I'On being a notable exception), so there isn't much walkability to speak of. You could raise a family in Hilton Head, but unlike Mt. Pleasant, I don't think of it primarily in those terms; I think of it as a place for rich retirees. I'm not sure if the GA Islands are the same.

As far as the GA islands go, Wilmington Island is not a barrier island (meaning that it has no beachfront), is more convenient to Savannah, and though it has some lovely riverfront homes really offers a more typical suburban experience (rather like Mt. Pleasant).
Tybee Island is beachfront, very touristy, and IMO too transient to offer a great backdrop for childrearing. You would probably find yourself trundling over to Wilmington or Isle of Hope for many basic amenities such as groceries anyway.
I usually don't like to butt in when an OP says they have narrowed down their choices...but have you considered my town of St Simons Island, GA? It seems to offer much if not all of what you're looking for.
It's about an hour south of Savannah.

Thanks for the feedback! I had not considered St Simons Island but I think I might have to add it to my list. Thanks!

I'm looking to relocate as well. Where did you wind up moving to? My family is revisiting Mount Pleasant this spring. We are moving out of the Hamptons and are looking for a family oriented, friendly community. Mount Pleasant seems to have it all.
