DC is alot like Cincinnati, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Baltimore in a sense that they are both firmly Midwestern/Northeastern while also having some Southern influence.

You don't get a real southern influence until you pass Fredericksburg, VA on I-95.

Having grown up in Ohio, I see almost no midwestern influence in DC whatsoever. Baltimore is very similar to Cincinnati and St. Louis, but Baltimore and DC are very different cities. DC has a definite east coast vibe to it; its southern qualities are slowly being left behind.

I can not really explain the twang really well but it can be heard in many words like down, town, stamp, etc. Also the r slurs that actually prob originates from southern VA since many people all over VA pronounce words such as berry, erica, etc similar to burry, urica. Dc people also have the northern pronunciations such as mova, fava, bruva as mentioned earlier which you won't find in most of va or nc.

Here are some examples I found on youtube of some strong AA dc accents.

Heres another look at some of the other artists from DC and they're accents.

You can tell a African American D.C. accent from a mile away. There really isn't anything like it.

These two D.C. women are the best examples in Hollywood:

Taraji P Henson

Delonte West (crazy a$$) has a thick DC accent. Martin's character Sha Ney-Ney is also based on a DC accent. DC people stretch their R's forever. Instead of saying alright they say ahiiight. Carry = Currry; Current = Cuurrent. The whole brova, farva thing is definitely east coast all day.
