I think they're inherently incomparable.

The thing about nature, at least in my opinion, is that there is so much variety that all natural landscapes are beautiful in their own way. I can see why someone would choose Alaska over California, since there is way more natural beauty unspoiled by man up in those parts due to the sheer geographic isolation of the area compared to the comparatively crowded California (even in California's rural regions does it seem more crowded because you can go to Alaska and not see a soul for hundreds and hundreds of miles), but California could be chosen just based on sheer variety alone, with not one dominant feature of the landscape that's apparent.

In other words, I think its impossible to assign a normative value to natural beauty. We should all collectively enjoy it while its still there.

IMO, Alaska has the best and most underrated natural beauty of any place in the US. I'll dig up some pictures later, but again, I think it's easily the best out of any place in the US. California is up there with the best, but Alaska trumps everything in terms of natural beauty. If only it was actually a desirable place to live.

LOL, that might work well for a stand-up comedy routine. Alaska has much higher mountains, much more coastline, lush forests, lakes, glaciers, islands, wildlife and of course the northern lights. California is impressive in comparison to much of the lower 48. But Alaska blows California out of the water in terms of natural scenery and beauty.

I think Alaska get's overlooked here (understandably, this is an urban-themed message board and Alaska is anything but urban) but people here in the lower 48 forget what a rare gem we have up north.

alaska, california is too populated to beat it out just for that alone. alaska is untouched wilderness, california is resorts and national parks.

They are so diferent and both beautiful but I voted Cali because it's natural beauty is very diverse. From deserts to snowcaped mountain tops and sunny beaches, one can have it all. I love Alaskas beauty also. I stayed there for 3 weeks in Dec 08 and the mountains were breathtaking to me (i'm from a flat state) and it's beauty is pure and hasn't been tampered with. The air was so clean and clear there too.
