chiatldal - I appreciate your response earlier and I read it twice. I simply think we have two different points of view. I think you bring a lot to the forums here so I am not going to go any further with this. I appreciate your counter point of view. Each person interprets or perceives things differently and on these threads its interesting how you can whole heartedly believe something and realize another person will think you are totally wrong.
Me too, but Dallas and Houston are jumping into the rail system craze fairly late. At least respect that before anyone starts judging and criticizing DART.
I like Marta. I would ride it to the airport quite a bit when I lived in Atlanta. Very convenient for that! I like that Atlanta had the vision to put this system in place when it did. After this time period cities simply stopped investing in heavy rail. The parts of Marta that are underground give Atlanta a more established city feel. The elevated lines seem to be pretty much the same as light rail in the aspect of presence.
Light rail is the direction places across the world are going these days, its much easier to expand and is very easy to adapt to neighborhoods.
Light rail gives a city a more futuristic feel, Houstons rail line is a great example of this.
Dart is doubling its rail coverage this year with mostly elevated or below grade rail lines with an additional (orange) line under construction now which will connect DFW airport to Dallas finally. The light rail system is just one component of rail in Dallas though, theres a trolley line in the heart of the city that is beginning expansion, a commuter rail line, a second commuter line will be opening this year and a third commuter line is in the works to start construction soon as well as a downtown streetcar system that has received quite a bit of federal funding lately to start construction in 2011. Its very exciting to see how much infrastructure is coming on board here in Dallas this year and in the near future.
No question about it MARTA is the better system. I don't think this is much of debate. In the future "Yes" but now "no". Dallas has to increase ridership. MARTA serves the people that need it the most. I am not so sure that I will be willing to say that for DART. IMO

I completely agree with this. Dart serves mostly neighborhoods as a source of commuter rail for going to work only or the occassional tourist going sight seeing or people going to specific events. The majority of Martas rail lines are established in neighborhoods where this may be their only way of transportation to get around in the city.
