Yeah, the question said "city," but it appears as though we're really talking about metro areas.

I've provided a few examples for each size.

Over 8,000,000: New York City and Los Angeles
Over 3,000,000: Chicago, Miami, Houston, Boston
Over 1,000,000: Portland, Providence, Orlando, Oklahoma City
Over 500,000: Madison, Tulsa, Boise
Over 200,000: Boulder, Des Moines, Memphis
Less than 200,000: Augusta (Maine), Santa Fe, Sioux City
Metro Chicago has over 8 million people so it is in the wrong category. I am a Chicagoan, but I like the more compact size metro of San Francisco and Boston.

Really you think a city over 3 million is the same as a city over 8 million?
I kept this to US cities in the examples but on the global scale I see a huge difference between a 3 million population city and the 8 million + mark.

How can you really compare a city of around 3 million like Boston or San Antonio to a city like Sao Paolo, Cairo, Istanbul, Moscow or any of the other top dogs?

you can only if you have never been there, once you have traveled a bit, and assuming you like big cities, it becomes very obvious there are only a handful in the u.s. that can compete with the rest on the planet.

personally I like huge modern global cities, as it allows for people from all walks of life to live there.

I don't have much perspective, only living in towns of around 300k (Des Moines) and smallers...but I know that I'm ready to experience something larger. NYC or LA would be too big for me, but I'm actively looking into relocating to DC or Chicago.

A lot to like about a city the size of Des Moines - I can get anywhere, do anything in 20 minutes. Great sense of community here. Just ready for more density, and attractions/entertainment on a larger scale.
