I'd much rather fly between LA and SF than drive between the two. I-5 in Central Valley =

It's further between the LA Basin and the SF Bay area than it is between NYC and DC. It just makes more sense to fly between the two to me.

Yes, its very impractical for a business traveler to drive btwn LA and SF...that's like 5-7 hours each way.

However,
the new High Speed Rail is supposed to take you from DT LA to DT SF in 3 hrs.

With the current financial situation of California, isn't the HSR just a pipe dream?

Its already passed voters and funding will come from various sources. I personally voted against it because I think we don't need it but people seem to want it.

At the same time, there is a huge brouhaha right now revolving around the Northern leg of the system--people in superrich Silicon Valley suburbs DO NOT want the train going through their towns and are pushing for the route that should have been the route in the first place-the train should enter the Bay Area through the East Bay's Altamont Pass.

I don't doubt its going to get done-but due to our own instate red tape and legal drama-its going to take a long, long time.

There's already high speed rail from DC to Boston.

Kinda sorta. Europe and Asia laugh at our idea of "high speed rail". In reality, the Acela line is only a regular Amtrak line that isn't encumbered with other Amtrak trains. It's not a true high-speed rail.

But, yes, for the U.S. it is really the only one of its kind.
