Just curious; Ft Worth seems like the older of the two - Dallas seems to have developed to overshadow Ft Worth - what caused this and why?

Did you try googling the question?

Dallas was at the intersection of two main rail lines, and also was the center of the east Texas oil boom when they found oil to the east of Dallas.

Fort Worth was the center of the cattle industry.

Dallas just produced more money and jobs, so grew quicker.

Dallas wasn't the center of the East Texas oil boom...

And early Dallas leaders were very smart in taking the rail lines away from other cities and having them routed through Dallas instead.

^ This.

And, early on Fort Worth was not an attractive place for businesses or families to settle. It was a rowdy Cowtown. Dallas didn't have that reputation.

Dallas also received the better deal with DFW Airport's location. DFW is more of a gateway to Dallas than Fort Worth.

Dallas took risk and Fort Worth didn't thats why Dallas stole Fort Worth thunder, but Fort Worth has gained a lot traction since 2000 and has made up a considerable amount of ground on Dallas.

Basically what kdogg said....

Fort Worth has been a pretty conservative city when it comes to MAJOR projects. We're just now getting our modern streetcar system and expanding the central core of the city to twice its size to add mixed-use development jobs, parks, a riverwalk and urban lake.

Also, we have mixed-use neighborhoods west and north of downtown, and creating "urban villages" in the near future. That should add to the charm we already have.

Barely though. You still have a straight shot (pretty much) to Fort Worth on 121.

Funny thing is that a guy I sat next to on a flight a few years ago told me - the thing about the DFW airport is the terminals are in Ft Worth and the Rental car place is in Dallas - After experiencing it I see what he meant - that airport covers one huge footprint
