I can agree to that, too. Each person has his or her own taste. Hey, for some people, Philly is the most fun and exciting city to be. The same goes for Atlanta. I, on the other hand, just want a really nice city with a good or great downtown. That's how the city gets is heart. if the heart is not beating well or not present like many cities I blog, the city is sick and derelict, and that may only be me. The city with good downtownsenver, Indianapolis, San Jose, Boulder, Boise, Portland, Seattle and Montreal. San Francisco's downtown is schizophrania. One hand, it's good with Union Sq. and San Francisco Center with Nordstrom and Bloomingdale. On the other hand, it's one of the dirtiest downtown in the country with full of bums and pandhandlers. Just go down on Market St. As for New York and Chicago, in case of Chicago, the Loop is mainly financial district that goes to sleep after 9 unless there's an event or theater show going on. State Street shopping and Millenium Park are nice but that's not enough. Most the action is north of the river. State St. shopping is not that strong. In case of New York, what downtown? Lower Manhattan with Tribeca and Soho. Sounds a like Dt. Detroit with cool neighborhood like Greektown in an otherwise sleepy/ run-down office district with hole in the middle due to 9/11.

Philly metro includes different counties and States while San Jose only include Santa Clara. San Jose would destroy Philly's GDP if you compare Santa Clara county with Philly county!

If you can see, most cities on this include multiple counties and larger area. Thanks for asking that.
LOL.Blah blah blah!Shoulda, coulda woulda! Its usually MSA or CSA is how GDP is measured. If it is a consolidated county then the whole county and its surrounding lesser metro areas are included for ALL CITIES.Why dont you put Phillys CSA up against San Jose?Oh thats right San Jose does not have a CSA.Why?Because it never will as long as San Francisco is around, thats why!Hence a real city with real economic might.

It actually is the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland CSA according to the US census bureau. Like five seconds of research could have told you that.

It's just a billing, though.

The part north of the river is part of Downtown... just not part of the loop, the financial district is a smaller part of the loop.

pretty harsh statement with the hole in the middle comment...

Um, you do realize that the WTC isn't in Tribeca or SoHo, right?

And it isn't a "hole in the middle". There is no "hole" anymore.

The WTC site is (among many other things) a growing tower roughly 50 floors in height, a smaller tower, and a ton of other construction projects.

As for the financial district, how is it "sleepy" or "run down". Hermes would build a flagship in a "run down" location? The world's most prestigous investment bank (Goldman) would have its HQ in a "run down" location? Four Seasons, Cipriani, Ritz Carlton, W, etc. etc. would have "run down" locations?

I mean, the financial district "only" has 100 million square feet of office space, which is "only" about 10 times as much as most cities. And, of course, the financial district isn't even the #1 or #2 commercial center in Manhattan. Most of Manhattan's 500 million square feet of office space is in Midtown or Midtown South.

And you are seriously comparing the tacky Greektown casino block in downtown Detroit to SoHo of all places??

Greektown is the equivalent of one of the hottest and most popular shopping destinations on earth? Greektown has Chanel, Prada, etc. etc. begging to pay $1,000 per foot to build global retail flagships? Greektown has billionaire residents like Rupert Murdoch and Carlos Slim?

Durf, you should do an urban planning stand-up routine. I really think you would be a big hit! Greektown in Detroit is now the finest urban living on the planet! A third-rate casino, some Greek diners and an enormous parking garage!

Yes, I must say I was shocked at that description of the twin towers site...

Grapico, no I don't awknowledge that river north is in downtown since it really wasn't back in 1980's and 1990's. They were very clear about the definition of Chicago's downtown which is to the Chicago river. They only recently extended it to Lincoln Park starting back in 1998 since the explosion of condos in river north area sort of solified the area, and they kind of gave on the Loop since it had a heart time regaining its luster. The whole state now declare that river north is part of the greater downtown area. 3 miles long, hah? Alot of gaps in between if they play this game of broadening the area of downtown Chicago. Come on, man. Let's get real here. I'm not that ignorant.

Ohio248 or Manhattan248, ofcourse I know that Soho and Tribeca are not near WTC. That's the problem with so called "downtown" of New york. It's only on the edge of downtown or Lower Manhattan, no impact on the financial district. Are Soho and Tribeca all that? Like I said, it's like Greektown for Manhattan. Soho and Tribeca got some stores but those districts shut down after 9:45 every night, and I'm the only one walking in those areas, a Big Disappointment!
