I agree with Houston, Sacramento and Fort Lauderdale as being underrated, and Kansas City to a certain extent. Portland is largely overhyped, and I get tired of hearing again and again that Baltimore and Pittsburgh are underrated. If you play the underrated card too much, it gets annoying. They are getting too much attention in the "being underrated" field. How can you be underrated if you keep advertising everywhere that you are underrated? This has got to stop. We know that Baltimore and Pittsburgh have nice areas, but they are not all that. People are paying enough attention already to these formerly industrial cities. I am glad that Cleveland and Milwaukee didn't make the list. They actually get less attention than Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but they are hardly underrated in any way. Pittsburgh (and Baltimore to a certain extent) is getting to the point of being overrated because of the heavy advertising of being underrated.
I don't really agree with Ft. Lauderdale, I guess its overrated for a tourist destination but not for cities in general. Its got no real economy to speak of and leeches off of Miami for the most part. I think its nice, I've spent a significant amount of time there and a close friend was a staff writer for the Sun Sentinel until about a month ago when he quit (yeah quit in the middle of a recession, he's got balls). It just doesn't strike me as anything special. Nice for a visit if you don't want the crowds of Miami but nothing more than that.
I agree with the comments that Portland is not underrated. Its known by the liberal crowds and ignored by the people that don't care. Which for Portland seems just about right to me. In fact NPR was talking about the young chefs of Portland and their liberal ways employing local produce and how cute they all are with trendy haircuts and tattoos.
Not to sure how I feel about Louisville. I think there are a lot of cities with just as much claim that don't get the credit they deserve. Almost any major city in North Carolina or Virginia. Maybe even Madison WI, Oklahoma City, or Baton Rouge.
I've only been to 3 of the cities on the list (Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Houston). Its been about 15 years since I've been to Houston, so I won't make any arguments about that. KC and Minneapolis are both very underrated, IMO. Another place that I think should be on the list is Oklahoma City.

this is true, i have been hearing the pittsburgh underrated thing for a longgg time due to business advertising coming from there and supposedly some new "tech sector" in Pitts that really hasn't spanned out.
Good to see Fort Lauderdale up there, it always gets overshadowed by Miami. Miami can get hectic sometimes so you need a good place to go and get away for a little while, no better place than it's neighbor Fort Lauderdale.

I don't get Baltimore. Why is it underrated? I think most people think of Baltimore as nice city with the inner harbor, one of the first retro downtown ballparks etc.
Then you find out the city has some of the worst crime in the country and most of the city is not even livable by most people's standards.
I like Baltimore, don't get me wrong, but overrated, it is not.
I also agree that Portland is highly overrated. I love Portland, but it aint all that.
For its size, Houston doesn't compare well to its peers. That's why it flies under the radar.
