I think on a national basis Austin is overshadowed by San Antonio, Dallas and Houston.
It's a large city with intelligent residents, great livability and cool music scenes. I just think the Big Boys of TX (the three above) outshine Austin in the media.

I actually think as far as media goes, Austin outshines them.
And I agree overall it does get overshadowed by Houston and Dallas in Texas, but not by San Antonio.
San Antonio and Fort Worth are ordinarily the most overshadowed, and even more then them would be El Paso.
I agree. Dallas and Houston are much larger and more established metro areas than Austin and they deserve more attention. I think Austin is very successful in conveying its message being a nice city with jobs and good music scene but actually it is still a small metro area and the infrastructure is not upgraded enough to support the growing population. It is by no means underrated.

I don't know what data you're talking about, because it's been well behind L.A. and several other cities in CA for years.
There was a fluke year or two right around 2000 (which Al Gore took full advantage of to try and put his opponent and Texas through the mud) but it was just that... a fluke. And that was just ozone pollution, not other types of air pollution, like particulates. Look at ALA stats from the last few years...
I will cast a vote for the place that I grew up in -------Milwaukee.
The city has matured and developed into a fine place to live and visit. Many festivals during the summer----new and varied night life downtown around Mason Street and the third ward area. There are lots of fine restaurants---Milwaukee is far from Bratwurst and Beer.
Only about twenty minutes outside of Milwaukee you will get into the beauty of rolling hills of Wisconsin-----the Kettle Moraine area is very pretty.
If you desire to spend time in a big Milwaukee hope in your car south on I 94 and Chicago is less than two hours away.
