Texas is a business state and is therefore fiscally conservative. Which is why conservatives will still run much of the state even if we elect a democratic governor. Our officials know where our bread and butter comes from. But socially, I would say that Texas is actually easily one of the most liberal southern states. And those who arent liberal are more libertarian than old school conservative.

Ill also say that outside of Eastern Virginia, the rest of that state is pretty darn socially conservative.

texas could probably go on to be a blue state for all of eternity and you'd still be running around talking about how we're nothing but a bunch of backwards, bush-worshipping hicks

It actually can be argued that every state is conservative. According to Gallup there is no state where people people are more likely to identify as liberal than conservative. (DC is not a state) Vermont and Massachusetts are about as close to having an equal amount of self-described liberals as self-described conservative.

State of the States

Although it would be more defensible to state that no state is liberal or at least no state is Left-wing. (Liberal and Left are different things in most of the world. Left is concerned with redistributing wealth and benefiting socially disadvantaged groups. Liberal is more about civil liberties, progress, and what helps the most people. Similarities, but there are differences. A Liberal will usually oppose "hate speech laws" while a Leftist may support them as necessary to protect a disadvantaged group.) It does seem there are about 20 states where self-described moderates outnumber conservatives. So it could be stated states in the US are either moderate or conservative. Looked at internationally the only state with a strong quasi-socialist party is Vermont and almost every US state is more religious than most of Europe.

Anyway going by Gallup Virginia is the most liberal state in the South. The least conservative state in the South is also Virginia. On both these it beats Florida. According to Pew Survey Florida is less religious if you deem Florida Southern. (Religiousness tends to correlate with conservatism in the US) Virginia seems to be the least religious, by Pew, if you don't deem Florida Southern. However all Southern states seem to have above average religiosity going by Pew.

To tell you the truth, I think politics suck whether your conservative or liberal or w/e...it's all stupidity.

A big mistake I see is assuming party affiliation with conservative/liberal since it can not, especially on social issues and with minorities. Also a republican in Mass. is often more liberal than a democrat in Alabama. Also what is defined by liberal anyway, economic issues or social ones? I am assuming it is the latter. Raw vote totals might not be a good indicator due to reasons explained earlier.

I would go more by area and not state, in general it is anywhere with a larger number of transplants.(even if they would be considered conservative where they come from they would likely be considered moderate where they move to) Also college towns will be that way too. (That is general rule regardless of region) The states that have been mentioned are drifting that way relative to the rest of the region. (South Carolina is starting to as well for similar reasons since transplants are starting to appear there as well) Basically you are seeing a split between the Atlantic Coast South and the rest of the South and is diverging politically. (Unless some non-Atlantic South states start getting larger number of transplants which TN is most likely)

pretty much. honestly, the only part of the state that is strictly conservative is east texas, in my opinion. which makes sense, as it's far less diverse and highly religious (which is not necessarily a bad thing)
