Miami has a good downtown (including bayside) and Atlanta's DT is sad now. I recently visited and I'm real disappointed at how much nightlife and liveliness its lost. I think there is too much competition from midtown and suburbs. New Orleans is good but I don't know many other really good southern downtowns.

As far as I know, DT was never a nightlife hotspot. Its role is now more touristy in nature outside of the typical uses.

Charleston and Savannah. Austin from what I've heard.

I'm not going to argue that Sixth Street has the best or most unique nightlife, but it does have 2 characteristics that are unique: the very heavy focus on live music, and the fact that the nightlife areas are very, very compact and close together, which makes for an interesting scene downtown.
This is what I SAW, at least relative to other places I've been. And having bars in close proximity to one-another is not unique in this country.

You should get out and see Austin more if you visit it again. I am 30 and it offers a lot of options for people my age for both music and nightlife. Austin is a fast rising star in the U.S. just this year it placed behind only NY, LA, Miami, Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta in global fashion scene. Its SXSW film festivals are known about in all corners of the country, its music scene in particular rock n roll, punk rock, metal, indie, and live music are know about. Nice place but would be nicer if it was the size of Dallas or DC IMO
