I'm currently about to finish my senior year of college at Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Since my time in college is quickly coming to an end in a year, I need to decide where I want to live. And I am hoping that many of you here on CD could suggest a place for me.
For the longest time, I wanted to live in a HUGE city like New York and Chicago. For starters I have family in both areas (more in the New York area) and like the world, international cities that both are. However, the cost of living in both cities (especially New York) is astronomically high and competition for any type of well-paying job is tough. So, I think the best bet would be to go and live in a major city in the South, considering that I could get some kind of city living but still have a relatively low cost of living.
By the time I graduate I will be 22 and probably still single (I don't want to get married til I'm nearing 30). My parents want to move to Florida when they retire and I have no real reason to stay in Tennessee because of that. And on a side note, I actually want to live in the city and not a suburb that's 30-50 miles away. So if anyone is saying I should move to Houston because Katy is nice, that doesn't really count. Though Raleigh can be given a pass on this since Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary are very prominent and important cities in that particular area.
Atlanta, Raleigh (along with Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary), Dallas, Houston and Charlotte all seem to be great cities from what I hear, though Atlanta is the only one I have visited, so I chose these 5 cities to choose from. With all the information I have given about myself, which one do you think I would be most comfortable in, financially and socially?

Looks more like you're into the big city type of thing, and that you like a HUGE city. With that, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas.
Atlanta would be a better adjustment for you as far as climate goes. And it's closer to where you are now and has all the big city amenities, so I would recommend that.
But if moving to a state a bit further is a possibility then check these cities out:

Charlotte and Raleigh are great cities too, but the other three are much larger. And going off your post I think that's what you want big city that stays in the inexpensive side.

If you seem to prefer larger cities, Atlanta/DFW/Houston would be the best options for you.
I know you said you're getting your Bachelor's in Sociology, but what type of career are you interested in? That will play a major factor in your decision. Economically, DFW and Houston would be your best options. Atlanta's situation is improving, but we have a bit of a ways to go. There are a lot of Tennessee transplants in the Atlanta area (but I do see more UT alumni than MTSU almuni), so I'm probably sure you're networking options would be at an advantage here.
Atlanta would probably be the most similar to Middle Tennessee in terms of climate and scenery. The Nashville area reminds me of Atlanta 20 years ago in many ways. If your parents are in Florida, it would be the most convenient city driving and flying wise. If you're looking for a change, but still want to be in the South, DFW and Houston aren't bad options at all.

Atlanta. It would be culturally closest to what you're used to, it's closer to your home state (TN I'm guessing), FL where your parents will be, and other places of interest, and has MARTA and other urban infrastructure in place. Dallas wouldn't be bad either. It has most of those things, too. I love Houston, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone in your situation only because it has a ways to go in this area (needs better public transit and focus on its urban core), can be a hard city to learn to navigate, and it is somewhat isolated for day/road trips. I've only passed through Raleigh once and don't know it well enough to hold an opinion.

I would basically make the same case for Atlanta as OmShahi, and add that you would be closest to your family in this locale.
My daughter (21) lives in Midtown Atlanta and the streets, restaurants and bars are clogged with twentysomethings. She loves it there.

That Dallas video view of Fort Worth was beautiful one of the better shots of Fort Worth.
It's funny how the Atlanta video says A city of the New Millenium, but all you see is massive freeways cutting through downtown.
