Perform complex motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Work involves diagnosing, repairing, and/or replacing malfunctioning parts and components; preparing new vehicles for operation and surplus vehicles for sale; and/or test driving vehicles to verify effectiveness of work performed. May train others. Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

General Duties:
Repair or replace heavy drive-line components such as engines, transmissions and differentials to return the vehicle to factory operating condition.

Diagnose, repair, and replace defective components, electronic elements, and vehicle system malfunctions through the use of service manuals, electronic testing, and diagnostic equipment and manual or pneumatic testing equipment.

Operate a wide variety of hand, power and bench tools and a variety of diagnostic,
measuring, and testing equipment in performance of assigned duties.

Perform routine maintenance and service including but not limited to oil and filter changes, transmission service, tire service, front-end alignments, belt and hose replacements, and other related service work.

Inspect and test drive new vehicles to evaluate for proper operation and verify the vehicle meets specifications.

Evaluate, identify, and diagnose the overall condition of surplus vehicles and make the necessary repairs to prepare them for disposal.

Perform State Motor Vehicle inspections.

Document work performed and parts used.

May train technicians in proper repair procedures and the safe and correct use of tools and diagnostic equipment.

May travel.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Education – Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent.

Experience – Three (3) years of full time work experience in a full-service automotive maintenance and repair facility.
One (1) year of full-time vocational training in automotive maintenance and repair may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

License and/or certification - Valid driver license from state of residence. Must have or obtain a Texas Motor Vehicle Inspectors license within six (6) months of employment. Must currently be licensed under Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sec. 609 – Mobile Air Conditioning Recovery and Recycling. Current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or vehicle manufacturer technician certification is preferred.

Technical Knowledge – Working knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive repair and maintenance and of the correct and safe use of the hand, power, and diagnostic tools applicable to the trade. Working knowledge of the safety equipment and procedures applicable to automotive repair facilities and activities.

Technician Skills – Ability to perform advanced automotive repair and maintenance procedures with limited assistance from a skilled technician in a safe and consistent manner to assure a quality product. Ability to safely and effectively use electronic, pneumatic, or manual hand tools as well as electronic diagnostic equipment.

Computer Skills – Proficient with personal computers and various software to access CD-ROM and web based diagnostic and service information.

Interpersonal Skills – Must exercise excellent interpersonal and customer service
skills - position continually requires an ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working/professional relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and internal/external customers.

Communications Skills – Must possess basic verbal and written communication skills, and be comfortable speaking or presenting to various and diverse groups. Able to understand, interpret, and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions and procedures.

Travel and non-standard schedules – May occasionally travel to other cities sometimes on short notice and for unknown durations to provide emergency Fleet support in extreme situations such as the aftermath of a hurricane. Ability to work extended hours and sometimes alternating shift schedules under conditions of emotional stress.

Organizational skills - Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a high-stress, fast-paced, multi-demand environment, and the ability to make sound work-related judgments and decisions.

Confidentiality - Must be able to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations.

Work Shop environment indoors, outdoors for extended durations when required, vehicle;
Ambulatory skills, e.g. stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance;
Perform strenuous work in cramped positions such as under seats or dash boards, vehicle engine bays, trunks or on your back while working underneath vehicles;
Hand-eye coordination and arm/hand/mechanical dexterity to effectively perform the job tasks;
Ability to speak, hear, smell, and exercise visual acuity;
Physical strength and stamina to perform duties requiring lifting, carrying, and handling of objects of sixty (60) pounds anticipated for this position.
Ability to work effectively in concert with others to move cumbersome and heavy equipment (up to two-hundred (200) pounds) safely in a variety of conditions such as loading and unloading equipment from trucks and/or installing equipment into vehicles;
Ability to drive agency vehicle throughout the state in performance of duties: moderate-frequency.
DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group and state title will be transferred with no salary change.

DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase up to 3.4%.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
