In regards to wealth, I'd say the wealth is more polarized on the eastside, and a little more evened out on the westside.

This may mean nothing , But I just was flipping though a book of
Cleveland History printed in 1988 , (that I have since 1988 )and this popped out ,
It seems way back then it stated that most of the Eastside were
" Native Cleveland's " and the West was mostly immigrants ,
darn that Bridge War , ( Ohio City ) . Then I logged on and saw this post.

I know plenty about the west side. My lack of diversity comment, in fairness though, is probably more west side to the suburbs. You're right, the city neighborhoods on the west side are pretty diverse, but outside of Lakewood, the western suburbs are pretty white bread.

Of course these are all generalities, but there is of course quite a bit of truth in them. It's pretty clear from this forum that west siders have a problem with reality.

The real reason there is so much wealth in Hunting Valley is because there is no room for the middle class there. Avg home value: $1.229 Mil.

I would say that the east side clearly has the biggest concentrations of wealth. And like costello_musian said, the east side is also more polarized and has all of Cleveland's ghetto burbs. The west side seems to be more middle of the road overall. I think the east side is larger in population as a whole, so it also has a larger population to pull from. Of course this is only concerning the suburbs. The west side of the actual city is in much better shape than the east.

These patterns go back to before the suburbanization of Cleveland. Back in the day the east side inner city had most of the wealthy residents, along with pockets of immigrants and the blacks. The west side back then was smaller and with no blacks and much fewer rich people. It is less pronounced today, but these patterns still influence contemporary Cleveland.

Cleveland used to have a registry of its wealthy residents called the Blue Book. This is from the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History:

A rich suburban folklore has grown up around these divisions and important differences do exist. Most social elites and many of their institutions gravitated to eastern suburbs, fewer went west and very few south. By 1931 66% of CLEVELAND BLUE BOOK entries lived in Bratenahl, Cleveland Hts., East Cleveland, and Shaker Hts.; Cleveland claimed 28% and Lakewood 6%. By 1981 84% lived in 10 eastern suburbs, 9% in Cleveland, and 7% in 3 western suburbs.
