Friend of mine is relocating to NE OH with a downtown job at Fifth Third. He asked me if there was decent public transit into Cleveland as he hates traffic/parking. Living downtown is not an option he wishes to explore.

Living there a few years ago, from what I can remember, most of the neighborhoods within a reasonable walking distance to Rapid stations were questionable, at best.

What are some of the safer/nicer areas within walking distance of downtown public transit, if any? Apartments or condos would be preferred.

^ Shaker Square, Little Italy, University Circle, Ohio City

W.65th stop and W.117th stop on the redline may have some options also.

How long have you been gone?? The top four areas I mentioned are all growing and improving. Some housing in Little Italy and University Circle are going for $300K-$800K with the new construction.

Side note:

I live in University Circle and I ride the Redline or Euclid Corridor (Healthline) daily.

Does it have to be the Rapid? Your options open signifigantly if he is willing to take a bus.

The w. 117th Rapid seems to be busy with a lot of foot traffic through the adjacent neighborhoods which I think is a real plus for safety. Adjacent neighborhoods are in both Cleveland and the Eastern end of Lakewood. Another rapid stop to consider is the Triskett stop which is the next stop west on the Red line. This is in the West Park neighborhood in Cleveland, I think for optimal public transit it is a good idea to live near a rapid stop and a frequently running bus for back up.

What does he consider nice? One problem with the Rapid is that it does not directly serve many nice neighborhoods.

I think these are the best options, although it depends on what he is looking for in a neighborhood:

Little Italy - safe and trendy area
Shaker Square - mostly safe but it borders a ghetto (also borders wealthy areas in the other direction)
Bird Town (SE corner of Lakewood) - safe but a bit grungy
Ohio City - trendy but has a sketchy element

You could live on ANY street behind the Puritas Rapid Station. Very safe neighborhood. Not a lot of rentals there, though.

How about the area near the intersection of Van Aken/Lee in Shaker Heights? Lots of apartment buildings there.

Yes, I would go with that or with Shaker Square, since the OP said he wants easy Rapid access as well as preferring apartments/condos.

Only caution about Shaker Square, as already mentioned, would be not to wander too far in the wrong direction, as the area borders some really rough 'hoods.

Living near the Ohio City (West 25th/Lorain) Red Line stop might work too as there are a number of loft apartments and such in the West 25th vicinity.
