That's 1 item out of thousands. The bottom line is that food is not subject to sales tax in OH.

In my experience, sales tax is about 0.5-1% higher in TX. Like in OH, food is not taxed. A friend of mine who lived in TX says that they like to impose hidden taxes, usage taxes (their cell phone tax is among the top 10 in the US), and higher fees in lieu of a straightforward tax. They're also running one heck of a deficit right now ($27 billion at last sighting).

Interesting, i didn't think about those hidden types of taxes. I wonder how their gas tax is.

The only groceries that are taxed are pre-prepared items and non-essentials, like roasted chicken, candy (I think), and alcohol.

I believe sodas are as well.

Soda? What's that! Just kidding. I thought it was a sin to refer to a carbonated drink as a soda in Cleveland. I'm from Maryland, so I've had many good natured pop/soda "debates" with many midwesterners.

I'd couple that with "non-essentials", but then it gets really tricky what you truly "need". I just know in MN that things like bulk candy and prepared food (cooked, and maybe even deli) is taxed.
