Hello All

I am from Egypt and just got immigrant visa , i plan to move to US in Sep 2012 , i made a big search for best cities to start in in terms of safety , diversity , jobs and cost of live and i considered Cleveland .

But I have some concerns

1-how is job market right now , are service/casual jobs jobs like taxi driver, cashier , delivery , etc plentiful

2-is it right that maximum for such jobs is hardly $2000 . month . would this salary be enough to a family with 1 kid

3-would $800 be enough for 2 BR apartment in safe area

4-how much is average utilities and grocery per month for 2 parents and kid

thanks

Welcome!

To answer all your questions -- Yes!

Cleveland is a very affordable city with more and more jobs coming online

For example, a new Casino and Convention Center are opening soon. Also the Cleveland Clinic and Univeristy Circle area continue to add jobs by the hundreds every year. Since 2005, they're averaged about 1000 new jobs a year in that part of town.

Good luck on your decision!

As long as you have at least $10,000 for living expenses. That will get you a fair place to live, food, utilities, etc for the 6 months or so it will take to get settled. You will enjoy Cleveland. Lots to see and do. Look for an Egyptian or religious social organization and it may be easier to get started.

I love legal immigrants. People that are willing to do the right thing to come here and improve their lives. I am sure you will be an asset to this country in no time. Good luck!

I'll try and answer your questions too.

1. See my post above

2. Yes it's enough -- but just enough. I'd shoot for $3000 or $4000 to live comfortably.

3. $800-$900 a month is enough. yes.

4. Utilities:

$25-$40 a month for electric
$20-$30 a month in the summer
$150-$200 a month in the winter if gas heat

Groceries -- $50-$70 a week...so $200-$300 a month.

Hope this helps!
