Considering a relo to Cleveland to work at the VA Hospital(would like a shorter commute (15-20min)). Looking for an area that is extremely family friendly, with newer homes and lots of shopping, restaurants, entertainment(for kids and parents), and a good school district for our kids. Will probably rent a home for a year or two before buying but I'd like to rent in the area so that we can get comfortable there and buy a house close by.

We currently live in Dayton, so if you are familiar, I'm looking for something like Centerville, Miamisburg type areas.

HELP! and Thanks in advance!

For a short commute, I recommend Shaker Heights, a beautiful, diverse community with excellent schools, albeit with mostly older homes. If you don't mind a longer commute, you might want to look into Mayfield Heights, Solon, Beachwood, or Lyndhurst.

What about Centerville/Miamisburg do you like?

15-20 min. from the VA is actually a pretty generous radius, so we'll need more info to give you a good idea of a nice neighborhood for you.

And when you say that you'll be working at the VA, you mean the one at University Circle in Cleveland, right?

If you're working at the VA in University Circle, I'd say there is very little similar to Miamisburg/Centerville within 20 mins (I am a former Centerville resident...). The closest areas of newer homes, shopping, etc... like the ones you know would be east about 30 mins in Mentor. Another area more similar would be Strongsville - but that's southwest and probably 40-45 mins away. Solon or Twinsburg would be similar (without the mall) - about 35-40 mins south - and Westlake or the Avon/Avon Lake area on the west side, about 35-40 mins. The places some noted above, like Shaker Heights, Lyndhurst, Beachwood etc... are all nice - in some cases among the most desirable in CLE - but are not, in any way, like Centerville or Miamisburg...

Richmond Heights has some new developments. But newer developments tend to be in areas away from VA. Strongsville, Medina Co., Westlake, Avon, Avon Lake, Mentor, Chesterland, Kirtland, past 271. So the commute would be longer. I would settle for Beachwood, Mayfield Heights if I were you.

I second Richmond Heights and Highland Heights. I think that these two suburbs offer what you want while being as close to the VA as possible.
