It seems that alot of the information posted so far indicates that Cleveland is a place that is on a major decline. Is this true? or is the picture being painted not as bleak as it sounds? I am contemplating moving my family here, and based on what I am reading ...Cleveland is starting to sound alot like the city where I grew up...Is this the case? Are there any good places to live, and good schools to go to (that are not private)....or is everything being swallowed up in the decline? I don't mean to offend anyone...not my goal at all...I am really just trying to get the real picture.

There are a lot of great places in the Cleveland area. Many public schools are excellent too. However, the city itself is not in the best shape. I wouldn't say that it is on a major decline. That already happened. I'd say now it is very stagnant. Not declining, but not getting much better either. Thats just my opinion. Others may disagree.

That being said, if I had a family, I would definitely not be afraid to move to the Cleveland area. I would probably just chose one of the nicer suburbs, and not the city itself, or some of the declining inner-ring suburbs.

If you have questions about specific areas, just ask!

I am contemplating a new position in Painesville. I grew up in Detroit so I know about urban living (the ills and the thrills...LOL) however, I moved to the DC/Maryland area lived there for about 15 years and loved it. I would like a similar type of area for my family. I would definately like to live in the suburbs...as growing up in the city was enough for me...I don't need to live there now. I would like to be where there is good schools, shopping and restaurants but since I don't really know the area...I don't know which areas to ask about. Is is possible to live somewhere near Painesville...(within 30-35 minutes or so) that is like this?

The city of Cleveland has crime and poverty just like most cities, but unlike alot of cities, most of the suburbs of Cleveland are really safe.Alot of the cities that everyone thinks are the greatest in the world have alot of dangerous suburbs, thats not the case with Cleveland,in most of Cleveland's suburbs homicides are very rare.Like boardmanite siad, right now alot of Cleveland's neighborhoods aren't in the best shape, but Cleveland is a small part of the metro.Suburbs like Solon,Westlake,South Euclid,Parma,Mayfield Heights,Shaker Heights,Cleveland Heights,Broadview Heights,Brook Park,Bay Village,Berea,Brecksville,Highland Heights,Lakewood,Lyndhurst,North Olmsted,Olmsted Falls,North Royalton,Parma Heights,,Seven Hills, and Strongsville all have very low crime rates, and those are just suburbs in Cuyahoga county, and thats not even all the ones in Cuyahoga county that are safe, thats just some of them. And get this, those cities in 2005 combined to have a population over 500,000,but get this they all combined only had 4 homicides. So no,right now the actual city of Cleveland is not in the best shape, but factor in the suburbs, and crime is not a big issue at all in the Cleveland metro area.So if your looking for a safe area to live,Cleveland metro is the place for you.

Let's see... Painesville is in Lake County, which as its name suggests, is right on the lake So, at least in my book, that is an automatic plus! Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the area around Painesville. In my experience, the Eastlake/Wickliffe/Willoughby/Willowick area on the western side of Lake County is a nice, convenient area. I'm hoping someone else can comment on places like Mentor and Painesville. There are also some very nice suburbs along I-271, such as Pepper Pike, Beachwood, Lyndhurst, Mayfield, etc. My personal favorites are Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights, but they are closer to Cleveland proper. Shaker Heights' schools have a great reputation, and homes there are expensive by Cleveland standards. Cleveland Heights is artsy and has more of an "urban" feel to it than the newer suburbs. Its schools are not rated as well as Shaker Heights. If you'd like to be in a more rural setting, but still fairly close to shopping/restaurants, check out Chagrin Falls or Chardon. They are very quaint little towns.

Well, I hope that gives you some idea about which areas to look at. Good luck!

All of Painesville surrounding area is great. Be carful because there is a difference between Painesville City and Painesville TWP. Painesville City schools are not as good as the TWP's. Painesville TWP, Concord, Mentor and Perry are all great places to live.

I grew up in P-Ville

Howdy mspryce,

Cleveland isn't quite as dumpy as Detroit; I don't think anyplace could honestly rival Detroit in that respect...

But it's close!

I would have to say (like you, not trying to offend anyone, just bein' honest) that relocating from Cleveland to Columbus was one of the wisest decisions of my adult life so far! Economically/career-wise and in many other respects, Columbus is just a better city for people under 40.

Hope this helps

I dont think Cleveland is as bad as Detroit, but its not too far behind. Ive been to many parts of Cleveland and I can tell you firsthand that the city is really bad, last year it was the 7th most dangerous city in the country. The Eastside of the city has many areas that will look very similar to Detroits bad areas. The Westside of Cleveland is better than the Eastside but still has a lot of areas that are all low income and high crime with lots of drugs. East Cleveland is in even worse shape, and the government is very corrupt. The other suburbs of Cleveland are a whole different story though. Cleveland has some really really nice looking and safe suburbs. Parma even got on the top 25 safest cities in America list, the same year that Cleveland was on the top 25 most dangerous list (A couple years ago). The Cleveland metro has a lot to offer though, and if you look enough you'll be able to find exactly what you want.

We have moved around a lot due to the military & now in SW FL, though moving back, FINALLY, to NE OH. I cannot wait. Yes, Cleveland proper is & has for years, been struggling with crime, drugs, poor schools, etc.

The one nice thing about "Cleveland" is the exceptional number of suburbs. Some are better than others. Just takes lots of research & common sense.

Areas such as Cuyahoga Falls, Richfield, Sagamore Hills, Solon, North Royalton, Aurora, Chardon, Chagrin Falls, Pepper Pike, Independence, Beachwood, Twinsburg....all are very decent suburbs. Decent public schools & many excellent private school choices. Crime is status quo...it is there, but not in droves like it can be found in any major metro city. YOu are not going to escape crime, but you can find areas that do not invite it. The above suburbs are not known for inviting crime.

It's not a perfect city & it has the typical bouts of good years & bad years. Overall, IMHO, I think NE OH is a very good place to raise a family. There are family friendly areas in each community as there are areas that are more transient or retiree centered. Just takes research.

You want to avoid the cities directly outside of "Cleveland" and most of the areas that carry a direct Cleveland zip code. Most of the best suburbs are about a 20-40 min drive from downtown.

Cleveland is a boomtown compared to Detroit...

Not because Cleveland is doing good but because Detroit has been comparatively obliterated by the loss of Auto, general mfg, and politicians who make Cleveland's look conservative and sane. Had it not been for the casinos Detoit would even be in worse shape.

Put it this way. Cleveland City is a sinking ship. Detroit is a sinking ship on fire being bombarded by aircraft and battleships while submarines launch torpedoes. Detroits woes extend further into the suburbs also.
