I don't think it was being implied that you can stop it, but rather where it's coming from. You're right, people have the freedom of movement and if their neighborhood suffers from riff raff moving in and committing riff raff acts, causing the location to no longer be desired, they have the right to leave. I believe this term is called "white flight" as the liberals so eloquently put it? Whites don't leave just because blacks move in, the leave when any form of riff raff moves in. You will see both capable blacks and whites and any other race for that matter leave an area if housing and schools begin a downward trend.

There are a BUNCH for sale for crazy cheap (like under 20K and some under 15K).
Would it be stupid to buy one (to live in, not to rent out) in that section, as in, is it dangerous?

(I am not local and am looking for a condo long distance).

Thanks so much for any info! (I read the thread and realize it's more of a white flight discussion but I hope you'll forgive a tiny derail).
At that price cash is probably an option for you, but just to put it out there having a large percentage of the condos there either for sale, rent, or in foreclosure or otherwise abandoned invites all sorts of headaches. It can disqualify your unit from certain types of mortgages, can create issues as far as solvency of HOAs/maintenance funds, and other issues. I would be inclined to buy a $20,000 house before a I bought a $20,000 condo unless there was some other oddball reason it was so cheap.

SQBTA, yes, it'll be a cash purchase. This complex, Benton Village, allows no renters, owner must occupy.
I believe the realtor who is telling me the complex itself is "nice", but I'm wondering about the neighborhood.
I want to use public transit as much as I can (I do have a car but wish to use it infrequently) and the realtor says this complex is convenient for that.
But I don't want to be mugged at the bus stop

ANYONE know about this section of EUCLID (Lakeshore Blvd and 235th st)?? Would a widowed old bag (me) be safe there?
These condos are not only cheap they have other advantages (for my situation) so I really want to find out if they're (the area I mean) OK.

I would look elsewhere. Those condos are very near some really crappy apartments known as Harbor Crest and Watergate which have like 1% and 0% recommendations for living there. Sure people can say "well those are apartments and she's looking for a condo" but the fact is that they are 30 seconds from those condos, and there are many other condos which are not in areas that have apartments with ZERO recommendation of living there. I was in Harbor Crest 10 years ago visiting an acquaintance and some guy was taking a **** in the hallway on the 3rd floor.... so yeah... I'd steer clear.

Since when did "white flight" become a "liberal" term? That's ridiculous. It's a very old term that's acknowledged by all. The fact is, it happens when white people move away when blacks move in, period. I know of many areas of Cleveland's East Side where white people put their houses up for sale when middle class and professional Blacks moved in. And the fact is, as you do correctly note, it's not just white flight when so called "riff-raff" move in, because professional and solid middle class blacks are just as quickly to high-tail it out of the city when such large groups of people move in and the neighborhood goes down...

Unfortunately the receiving white neighborhoods or suburbs for blacks are often hostile. Add to that there are steering practices and neighborhood Red Lining that hampers black movement... and although those practices are in violation of federal housing laws, they still occur with a wink and a nod.

Well that just sucks. I want a condo that allows dogs, these do.
Most of the others on my list allow only cats. I want to foster rescue dogs.
No wonder they are so cheap, right by what sounds like a true ghetto building.
Being poor but respectable (my case) truly bites; the places I can afford have criminals for neighbors

Don't listen to that guy, he's an ex Clevelander living in Cincinnati, and can't stand suburbs that aren't lily white and well off. It's not that bad, and those apartments aren't ghetto, even if they aren't the greatest. Euclid has some issues with crime, but it's safe for the most part. You don't hear much about violent crime there, it's more property crime if anything. You should be fine. Euclid is great for someone in your economic position: very affordable, but stable and pretty safe, with lots of nearby businesses and good public transit.

Oh Cleverfield, that sounds ok, then?
Poor and rundown I can dig, I am now a member of the lower class myself, I just don't want to be scared when I walk dogs or wait at the bus stop.

I looked into a tiny house in the west side (Sprecher Ave), even had an inspector go over it but he found it had more issues than I could afford to fix so I sadly let it go; it would've been perfect for my situation had it not needed so much work.

This BENTON VILLAGE looks very nice for the price and allows dogs, no (ha, that is, dog) weight restrictions either, so that is a BIG PLUS.

Re: "not lily white nor well off" being a bad thing according to some folks, yeah, I lived in yuppie neighborhoods for years and years and am well acquainted with that viewpoint; as for me, I'm an equal opp misanthropist and find peeps to despise in all classes, of all races and ethnicities in fairly equal numbers.

Thanks guys!

She won't be living in these apartments, so it's unlikely that the problems in those reviews will effect her in any way. You acknowledge that you haven't been there in quite a while. I'm there multiple times a week. The area is fine.
