I do remember Higbee's,May's,Halle's. They were wonderful stores. Then Dillards,Macy's,and Schottensteins ruined all that. More to add later.

I think the roving gangs of black teenagers ruined it. That and suburban shopping malls.

Now I keep hearing this song in my mind........

Mr. Jingle-a-ling
How you jingle-ling
Keeper of the keys
At Halle's Brothers Store
We'll be looking for
You to turn the key.

Lakewood Lore - Mr. Jingeling (http://www.lkwdpl.org/lore/lore00.htm - broken link)

A good childhood memory, growing up in Canton in the 1960s and watching Captain Penny.

This still makes me happy that we are moving back to the area....even though some of the "greats" are gone...where I currently live there is a WalMart on every corner, and people actually do all their grocery shopping at Super Target, Super WalMart, CostCo and other MEGA stores. The days of "customer service", "mom and pop", real community stuff is gone everywhere. Sad really.
At least back in my home town of Shaker...I don't have to look at a national super chain on every corner.

No, Beachwood Mall killed it. Some bad press after the fact didn't help, either. THEN the roving gangs took over after it was virtually empty. And it IS a suburban shopping mall.

The issue isn't local to Cleveland though. If you take a look at other markets, similar stories take place.

For example, I grew up in Philadelphia, Pa. When I was there, the major department stores were Lit Brothers, Gimbels, John Wanamaker, Strawbridge & Clothier, Snellenburgs and Bonwit Teller. All are now gone.

I grew up in Canton in the 1960's. I remember Clarkin's, that was like a Wal Mart before its time, I remember O'Neil's in downtown Canton. It seemed back then, that the employees were all professional, and not someone who was part time, or in between jobs. You would see the same faces week after week. I miss that.

Gold Circle turned into Hills, which turned into Ames, which then just closed down for good. The Brooklyn location right by Linndale is where I used to go to all the time.

Also is there anyone out there who remembers Hyperstore? Their advertisement had a train that Chugged along and said: "Hyperstore, Hyperstore, Hyperstore." It was around in like 1989-1990
