I am looking for news publications that write about local news. I know about the "Cleveland Plain Dealer" but I know most cities have small publications that talk about what's going on in a city regarding politics, events, civic undertakings etc.

They are usually in little boxes along the sidewalks people can pick up. I've seen a few but I don't know which is what. I'm being non-partisan here, I'd like to sample whichever is available to see what I might like or not. I would like to learn about my new city from different points of view. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There's the Cleveland Scene which is more like an independent, edgy publication than what I would consider a traditional newspaper, but YMMV.

I feel like there's another one, but can't think of the name. You can usually find them in the waiting areas of independently owned restaurants or in book stores. Wander around Cedar-Fairmount and see what you find.

Edit: There's also the Sun Press which is kind of like a smaller, more localized Plain Dealer. I don't think it's free though -usually comes with a subscription to the PD, IIRC.

Also a weekly online-only publication www.freshwatercleveland.com

Cleveland Scene is what you're describing.

Scene does very little actual news these days. Mostly entertainment and fluff. They/Free Times used to have some really great investigative articles.
