Well, this is city-data so the first few pages of this thread will be people arguing over whether or not Pittsburgh and Buffalo should be considered "Midwest". Let's just save some time and fast forward to the part where we realize that the term "Midwest" is a nebulous title used to describe everything west of Manhattan and east of the redwoods, depending on who you ask.

Also, I don't think it''s fair to group Madison, Akron, Dayton, or even Toledo with the other cities listed. Madison and Akron are basically glorified college towns(to long time Akron expats who might object, yes, this is more true than you'd believe. Things have changed.).

That's why it's fun.

Fine exclude them on your list, but Madison kills the other towns on your list, given state capitol status helps.

Oh, I agree. Madison is one of the few Great Lakes cities that doesn't have a rust belt, blue collar past. It shows.

What is the criteria used to shape your list?

What is your definition of a downtown? In the case of Cleveland, does it include the Market District, PlayhouseSquare or University Circle?

Criteria might include professional sports teams located in the immediate downtown; mass transit; skyscrapers; public spaces (such as Public Square in Cleveland); restaurants and entertainment options, etc.

By these criteria, Cleveland would best almost all cities on the list.

Well, thank god Columbus is better than Detroit or I might find the ranking silly. I really feel for the cities below it.

So... "Use my criteria so my city is at the top of your already subjective, made-up list!"

I know, let's go with the downtown of the city with a college that has won the most national championships in football in the last year!

Columbus clearly wins!

Is this your ranking list or are we supposed to rank from your random listing?

The basis upon which you are asking us to rank the cities is unclear. Also, it's laughable to compare Dayton to Cleveland or Pittsburgh.

By the way, your name, blabber, is most appropriate.
