My fiance and I will be moving to Cleveland this June and are looking to buy a home in either UH, CH or Shaker Heights. I've been perusing the boards, and it seems like there are some areas of these suburbs that are better (ie. avoiding western/northwestern border along Taylor Road in UH). Are there any other general tips on what would be the best areas to buy in these suburbs? We are coming from a city where it is very patchy in terms of safety (one street will be perfectly safe while the next one over is not), and do not know if it is the same way in this area of town.

Our other option is to buy a townhome or condo near Case Western/UH Hospital but haven't had any luck finding one less than $250,000. Any tips?

Thanks!

If you have kids or plan to in the next 3-4 years, I would rent until you figure out where you want to be longterm for schools. If you're not having kids, Shaker is the most stable overall, but CH/UH do have some nice parts so it's personal preference. Taxes in all 3 are bad, though. If I was buying and didn't have/plan on kids, I'd look somewhere else, personally.

University circle condo sounds sweet. But if tht doesn't work, try university heights, near John Carroll, between fairmount, warrensville, silsby and Taylor. Pleasant area, can definitely find something under 250k.

I recently moved to Cleveland as well and I strongly support your renting first. There are so many different areas here and each area is completely different. I moved to Cleveland Heights (north of Fairmont, South of Cedar) and it's really nice. There are always people walking their dogs, homes are well kept for, and people are generally pretty nice. However, I also agree with you that, at least in my experience, the eastern suburbs are very much a street by street basis as far as nice goes. My street is wonderful and so is the area I described but about 5 blocks south at Van Aken Blvd it starts to get sketchy REAL quick. There are some great deals to find in houses though. People seem to be leaving at great lengths. My street alone has had 4 houses go up for sale in the past couple weeks.
