WRnative, agree about Holden - one of the premier arboretums in the country and their hiking trails are quite rugged. In all of my travels in Ohio, I have never been to Malabar - despite going to Mohican probably ~ 4 times a year for the last 25 years. Always wanted to check it out - maybe this will be the year.
For Lake Erie beaches, it is hard to beat the East Harbor over near Sandusky. Also check out these great natural areas, particularly if you like birding: Sheldon Marsh, Pipe Creek, Magee Marsh / Crane Creek areas. These are all coastal areas along lake Erie. One of the wonderful things that has happened on the far west side (Sandusky) is that several large natural areas along the coast of Lake Erie have been preserved/donated from private land owners.

East Harbor is over an hour from Cleveland. Magee Marsh/Crane Creek about two hours.

Mentor Lagoons and Lake Erie Bluffs are much closer and additionally the beach areas are below bluffs that offer great vistas. Lake Erie Bluffs in particular is a good birding location as is the Lake Metroparks Girdled Road Reservation.

The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve is just minutes from downtown and is an exceptional birding area.

While Holden has some rugged trails, it also has some easy trails appropriate for kids and as well offers nature kits for kids, as well as special children activities.
