Tonight at 9 p.m. the PBS American Experience will feature "Murder of a President," a documentary about the life and assassination of President James A. Garfield. Reportedly, the documentary has segments featuring Garfield's Lawnfield home preserved as part of the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, the Garfield Monument at Lake View Cemetery, and other locations in northeast Ohio that tell Garfield's story.

The 2-hour program will be rebroadcast at later times and also eventually may be available online for viewing, as are some other American Experience documentaries. Here's a preview:

James A. Garfield National Historic Site:

James A Garfield National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service)

The Garfield National Historic Site is excellent, especially when house tours are available (beginning again in May). The National Park Service has said that Lawnfield is the most authentic of its 19th century Presidential homes because it largely is furnished with the Garfield family's furnishings. The NPS also spent millions restoring the house, including replicating wallpaper.

Garfield Monument:

Lake View Cemetery

The Garfield Monument is reportedly the largest of all Presidential burial monuments.

Garfield Monument

Garfield was the last president born in a log cabin, a replica of which can be viewed at the Moreland Hills Police Dept. off Route 91.

Thanks WRnative! I haven't been to the Garfield National Historic Site, but sounds like it would be something interesting come May!

If it gets hot out, just head over to Elenor B Garfield pool. 7967 Mentor Ave. Great location for a family picnic. Baseball fields, basketball courts, pavilion. Used to go there when I way younger and I'm sure it's even better now.

I started watching the video online and had to stop. The situation in the country during the election of 1880 was too painfully similar to today. Garfield's New York speech brought tears.

Rebek, I never knew of that speech. I don't believe it's highlighted in the small museum at the Garfield national historic site in Mentor. It was a highlight of the documentary, and really marked Garfield's excellence.

Surely that speech was well known among the Cleveland veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. I wonder if Garfield's views didn't inspire Levi Scofield to so prominently and uniquely feature African Americans in his Soldiers & Sailors Monument that so graces Public Square. In that respect, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument certainly is part of the Garfield legacy in northeastern Ohio.

BTW, Route 6 (Clifton Blvd., Superior Ave., Euclid Ave through East Cleveland, then Chardon Road in eastern Cuyahoga County) nationally is designated the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

I watched this as well. All that Ohio history that I was unaware of. I will be making a visit to some of the historic sites this summer. Amazing man with a tragic death.
