Hi City-Data Forum Users!

I am relocating away from my Cleveland apartment to go on an academic sabbatical in Texas for a few months. My lease does not allow me to sublease so I am looking for someone to take my apartment for a new 1yr lease.

Please offer suggestions on where to advertise other than Craigslist; it has yielded only one response in two months. I leave in July! I am in super close proximity to the Cleveland Clinic and the museum campus. I would consider it fairly posh: 2bd/2bth unit with a 24hour concierge, gated indoor/outdoor parking available, gym, in-unit washer/dryer and walking distance to the hospitals (Cleveland Clinic/ Case School of Medicine) which I work in between for medical research. Pets are allowed, and the front desk even pet-sits. Rent is on the higher side at $2.5K. Any suggestions?

I read many a helpful post when I first moved here. I am hoping you guys can now help me move out! (At least until I return in early 2017). Best!

Per month? That's insane. I'd suggest you drop the rent and eat some of it yourself. Better to be out $500/month than $2,500.

Aren't there places to post apartments at the Clinic and University Hospitals. Perhaps contact their relocation offices.

I could have a choice of pretty much anywhere on a 2500/month budget. Is your place actually comparable to the other choices out there? Soundslike you've priced yourself out of the market here.

Honestly the apartment building is really really nice. And for transplants from Boston, San Fran, or parts of Europe the rental price is actually competitive with apartments in their hometown (it was for me). This may be why it is filled with folks new to the city: Cleveland Clinic residents/clinicians, some Case Western faculty and med school students. That said, I certainly appreciate that it makes breaking a lease very challenging and makes me wish I didn't rely on a realtor when moving here.

I will likely hold out for a few more weeks with Craigslist and the UH internal listserv before trying a reasonable alternative (such as L2DB's). I will also check if Cleveland Clinic has an internal listserv/classified.

Just like others have said, $2500/month is incredibly high for Cleveland and probably at the HIGHEST end of the rental market. With that said, maybe try posting something on Reddit... There seem to be a bunch of young professionals over there; I guess it can't hurt!

Anyway to work it out with the landlord and pay a penalty?

I asked but they are pretty restrictive on the subleasing policy or terminating early. The penalty is completion of the rental term. I am tempted to also consider a realtor's assistance.. I have tried lowering the rent price as suggested. I will see how that goes for the next week or so before attempting other options. The suggestions are appreciated!

I would try some internal posting for Case students, especially if for the summer. There are international students who come for various programs, such as ESL (many from Saudi Arabia).

Or you can make all your money back and rent it for $10K during the week of the RNC

Are people actually paying those outrageous prices?
