I am visiting Cleveland and I need help from Cleveland residents. Also, congrats on the Cavs winning the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

1. What are some underrated things to do in Cleveland? We already have Progressive Field, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and a trip down to Canton and the NFL hall of fame planned.

2. What is the best hotel that is in Downtown Cleveland that is walkable to both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Progressive Field? Some hotels we are considering are the Radisson Gateway, Ritz Carlton, and Hilton Garden Inn.

3. What is there to eat in Downtown Cleveland?

4. Are there any beaches and is it safe to swim in Lake Erie?

Thanks for the help.

What week/weekend are you coming? There's a ton of summer festivals happening.

1)
- Westside Market (one of the top in the country)
- See a play at Playhouse Square (again, one of the top in the country)
- Little Italy
- Goodtime III dinner cruise
- Rent jet skis behind the rock hall
- "A Christmas Story" House and Museum A Christmas Story House | Ralphie's actual house from A Christmas Story with the Leg Lamp in the window. Now restored to its movie splendor and open year round for public tours that feature original props and costumes from the movie. Located in
- Cleveland Museum of Art -- FREE !!!
- Great Lakes Brewery tour https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/brewery-tours

2) I'd cross off Hilton Garden Inn...too far away by a couple blocks IMO

My favs ... and best for location/restaurants:

- Holiday Inn Express (converted old bank building with HUGE rooms) https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...land_Ohio.html
- Kimpton Schofield (brand new) https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...land_Ohio.html
- The 9 (most swanky and has rooftop bar) https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...land_Ohio.html

All three are on Euclid Ave between E.6th - E.9th ... IMO, the best area to stay Downtown due to walking proximities.

3) Some very cool places:

- Heinen's Grocery Store (seriously...architect also designed the NYC Stock Exchange and good takeout food)
- Mabel's BBQ (Iron Chef Michael Symon)
- Greenhouse Tavern (with rooftop)

4) Yes. Edgewater Park Edgewater Beach | Aquatics | Cleveland Metroparks

Enjoy!

You should buy an all day pass on the RTA, I think they're $5 and you can get them at Tower City (Terminal Tower). You can take the red line from downtown (Tower City) to the West Side Market, Little Italy, and University Circle (Art museum, Botanical Garden, MOCA, museum of Natural history). You can also use the all day pass to get to Edgewater via the BRT line, check Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority | Public transit provider for Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, Ohio for routes and times. You can also take the Green line to Shaker Square and the Shaker Nature Center (hiking trails, get off at the S. Park stop.)

If you're coming in via air, the red line has a stop at Hopkins Airport.

Also, ALL DOWNTOWN TROLLEYS ARE FREE. Great, easy way to get around downtown.

Thank you.

Do you know anything about the Radisson Cleveland Gateway? The reason why we like that hotel is because it comes with deals with free tickets to the R&R Hall of Fame. Any other hotels with similar deals?

$5 for a one day pass is really good. We were originally planning on going to California this summer, but it was too expensive. Instead we are going to drive along the Great Lakes from New York to Chicago and stop at many of the bigger cities.

I visited Cleveland back in 2013 and here are my thoughts to share:

1. University Circle is Cleveland's cultural mecca but it is not always on every non-business tourist's lists and so I'd consider it underrated. The free of charge Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Botanical Gardens are all there. It's easy to get to from Downtown via the "Rapid" (Cleveland RTA's rapid transit system) or Health Line BRT. I'd also stop by Shaker Square on the eastside and the Westside Market in Ohio City and grab some authentic Cleveland cuisine while you're at it.

2. How about the newly built Hilton right next to the Convention Center? It's within walking distance to the Rock Hall.

3. As mentioned in #1, the authentic Cleveland fare is mainly found outside of Downtown or what I consider as "Downtown". Asiatown (Superior Avenue between E. 30th and East 40th), Little Italy (next to University Circle, Shaker Square (last stop on RTA Blue and Green Lines before they branch off), Ohio City, and Tremont all have good restaurants. Don't leave Cleveland without sampling some Hungarian food because it is good! Balaton in Shaker Square is one such example. I never tried the restaurants and pubs in Warehouse District or E. 4th Street but a local might recommend a few. They're both lively places anyways but I never thought of them as anymore than standard burgers, fries, and beer places.

4. Edgewater Park is the closest to Downtown Cleveland but beaches abound all along the coast of Lake Erie. I stopped by a rather decent one in Ashtabula on the return trip home (yes, I drove as well).

The Rapid is an underrated, underridden, and sometimes underappreciated rapid transit system. It's cheap ($5 all day pass - you can't beat that) and really does take you nearly everywhere tourists would want to go. System-wide maps are available at the concourse of Tower City Station in Downtown. Do take advantage of this. You won't regret it.

Holiday Inn Express gets my vote. Have stayed there 2x. IMO, it's underrated. JohnnyVille across the st. is a unique store (in the arcade). Positively CLE is also across the street. Has great ideas of what to hit while you are there. My cousin works there.

Little Italy, Walk the cemetery, Covington area for the east side.

I have yet to do the museums and that's next on my list.

Westside Market is a must. Chagrin Falls (Popcorn Shop)

If you like maritime museums, the U.S.S. Cod may be the best WWII U.S. fleet submarine museum. Visitors enter and exit using the original hatches and ladders. It is fully equipped just as it was when decommissioned, down to galley aprons.

The Steamship Mather is the one-time queen of the Great Lakes and one of the most enjoyable ASME mechanical engineering landmarks.

Don't miss The Henry Ford, Cedar Point or Put-in-Bay on your Great Lakes tour.

Perhaps check out Castle Noel in Medina. If going to Canton, don't miss Ohio Amish Country centered in Holmes County, the largest Amish community in the world.

Read about these regional attractions, as well as the likes of Mentor, Kirtland, and Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, in the following article. Stop in Erie for Presque Isle, great for freshwater surf swimming and Waldameer Park.

The Radisson is fine. Book reservations ASAP. Cleveland is very popular in the summer months. Most Greater Cleveland hotels offer Rock Hall museum packages, and combo tickets with the Pro Football HOF also are available.

Please report back after your trip.
