The city that most shocked me with a median age of over 46 was Mentor. Perhaps this reflects all of the new assisted living and senior communities built in the city in the last decade.

The in-laws must really appreciate your visits, or not.

They sure do. Retired military colonel, moved many times. Somewhat tragic that they ended up sticking around in NEO but they have a lot of old friends and their health is pretty good.

Strange that such well-traveled individuals apparently are happily retired in Mentor, far from their beloved son-in-law let alone their daughter.

Realize who you're talking to, that's his schtick.

Who said 'happily'. Actually they realize they should have moved south but at there age it would be prohibited. I was fortunate to make move.

That explains the school closures over the past decade: Reynolds, Headlands, Center St. and Rice Elementary Schools have all closed.

Default Mentor public schools enrollment decline

<<In the past 20 years, Mentor Schools have gone from 11,216 students in 1994-95 to 7,855 in 2014-15, according to the headcount data....

“My opinion is enrollment is shrinking because of an aging population that aren’t downsizing, that aren’t moving out of their house,” Mentor Superintendent Matt Miller said.

In some communities, Miller said, young families have kids and when they get a little older, they move out and they move on.

“We don’t have that here in Mentor,” he said. “In Mentor families, the kids move out but the parents are staying. So we’re seeing a lot people around Mentor want to move into the district, the housing market here in Mentor is really competitive and I can speak to that.”

Wilson said the district is graduating more seniors than kindergarteners coming in.

“We haven’t quite flattened out yet, we predict several more years of declining enrollment,” Wilson said.

The district has reduced staffing proportional to the declining enrollment. Even with the decreasing student body, however Mentor remains one of the largest districts in Ohio.>>
