Oh they are definitely better. But I still think "beautiful" is a stretch (Cleveland just doesn't have a Beacon Hill or Back Bay). Certain buildings might be, but not the neighborhoods as a whole. "Charming" is a more accurate word.

Here's a better picture of The Detroit Shoreway.

Also, who in the world was in charge of getting pictures for this article entitled the "most beautiful" neighborhoods???? These are pretty bad photos.
2BR unit in Old Brooklyn goes for $600 - $650 / month.

I guess I'll be ok with charming. I've lived in Boston (not in those lovely areas though!) and now coming from Seattle where there is physical beauty everywhere but architecture not so interesting. Looking forward to a new environment but not expecting beautiful although hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

If you want a 2BR ground level apartment on the east side, you might check suburbs in Lake County. There are many options off Vine St. in Eastlake and along route 20 in Wickliffe.

Here are what may be some of the best values in Lake County, if you want a more upscale property:

These apartments are close to great parks (Lake Metropark system), including beaches, Holden Arboretum, and the Mentor shopping mecca. Mentor is the 6th largest retail center in Ohio.

Why do you want to be close to University Heights if working from home? You can use Google to check distance between prospective homes and destinations of importance to you. The above apartments would be about 1/2 hour from University Circle.

There are very cheap ground level apartments in Euclid. You may be able to buy a condo for $1,000/mo.

There also are some nice condos in Eastlake at the intersection of Lakeshore and 260th St. Check condo rentals for communities of interest at zillow.com.

If you're focused on Univ. Hts., read this thread carefully.

I'd agree that there aren't any urban neighborhoods where I'd call the whole thing beautiful.

But, I do think there are some residential neighborhoods that deserve the title. Edgewater and the parts of Lakewood along Lake and Clifton are excellent. As are the more notable segments of Cleveland Heights (Ambler Heights, around Derbyshire, etc). The Shaker Square historic district is also beautiful.

Sometimes I think I should look for a place in Old Brooklyn that's midway between Honey Hut Ice Cream and Jack Frost Donuts.

Hi, everyone, I drove 1.5 hours to Cleveland today. I searched old Brooklyn and mayfield heights, drove passed Garfield Heights, then went to see 2 town home in Parma, I just back to home now.
I spent 7 hours in these area.
Old Brooklyn is not good as expected. Garfield Heights is really not good. mayfield heights is good but the house I liked is about $1200 up. And the same kind house in Parma is around$1000.
Shaker heights and Cleveland heights seems not safe.
The Woodbury commons apartment and Big Creek town home in Parma is much better, but they have no room available now. I need to wait.

Hi,WRnative, really appreciate so many informations you provide! I will check one by one and go to Cleveland next week.
My friend is in case western university, I just want to live close to her. The case university circle seems not safe, it's not good for 2 girls to live, so I give up living around case university.
I know pay $1000 each month can buy a condo, but 4 years later maybe I will leave Cleveland,I'm afraid it's hard to sell , it seems the house price in Cleveland didn't raise much and some even drops.
I will live in Cleveland for 4-6 years. It seems to find a good place to live is not easy. I just don't want to dissapointed living in an area and move after one year, so I will do more reaserch.
Thanks again for your kindness!

University Circle and various University Circle institutions, such as the Cleveland Clinic, have their own, very significant police forces.

University Circle Police Department

While crimes do occur in University Circle, as anywhere, my general perception is that University Circle is relatively safe. Admittedly, nearby neighborhoods, such as East Cleveland, are problematic.

Perhaps review this page:

Crime + Security Reports | Public Safety | CWRU - Public Safety - Case Western Reserve University

A bigger issue might be affordability, especially for a ground level apartment.

The attractiveness of University Circle is indicated by such projects as Uptown and One University Circle.
