Do Cleveland expats, past and current, shape the perception of the city of Cleveland across the country or around the world? Some people say when they trash Cleveland, "I heard it from my friend who lived in Cleveland and he said it sucks." Most people that move out of Cleveland trash the city in the city they move to, but some show their pride. All CLE expats, past and current, tell me is that true, am I reading too much into it or am I looking at the wrong way.

I don't think it's true that most people who moved away trash the city. They mostly move for job or family. Only on city data do people claim they move places for population densities and streetcars. I meet tons of people at big ten networking events and Cavs games. People don't think nearly as much as you might think about this stuff. Transplants that I know are extremely transient in general. I've been in Boston 5 years and I've seen countless people come and go. Thus, overall people's strongest connections still remain to their hometowns, including Cleveland. I think lots of people regardless of where they are from think about moving back to their home town or home state to settle down.

It probably would depend upon why they moved. I have to say that I have very little good to say about Portland, OR these days the city from which I moved a few years ago. But that's because it was not a good place for me. So, I guess it would be the same for Cleveland or any other city someone moved from because they felt they could no longer live there.

On the other hand, I moved from Chicago to Portland not because I had anything against Chicago but because I was young and adventurous and wanted to live in a completely different type of city.

But you also said in a different post that the people who are speaking the loudest for Cleveland right now are the ones who moved away. So, somebody in Boston, Philly, NYC or Cali are gonna say there must not be nothing in Cleveland that's why you moved here. Correct me if I'm wrong.
