I certainly would not be looking to live over there. Rule of thumb is West 80s/90s off Detroit = Bad.
A lot of people really like living in this area and they are all part of what you would likely deem the "professional class"

I've actually lived on the exact block on which one of those listings is located (w81/Detroit) and it is a fantastic community with very engaged residents.

Yeah I know someone over there, they seem to like it. Perhaps these views are out of date or simply just a preference thing, which is fair enough. I personally don't see much issue with that area.

Somewhat unrelated, but Local West makes some amazing sandwiches. Some of the best I've had.

The West 80s definitely have had some issues. However, there are still a lot of people that find it a desirable place to live (and it's changed pretty drastically in just two years). It's also unrealistic to say that almost any area hasn't had some type of issues within the same time period. Ohio City and the core of Detroit-Shoreway have seen car break-ins and certain types of property crime/petty thefts skyrocket over the past half year or so. In some regard I think it's probably tied to the opioid epidemic, but it's probably also due to the very rapid socioeconomic changes in the west side and how those fuel the micro-relationship between gentrification and displacement.

Anyway, back to the specific topic, W81 is an awesome street and the house that has that 1 bedroom suite is a standout, in my opinion. It was remodeled during the time I lived on the block.

Me, if I were to move to the area, I'd stay between West 58th and West 74th and as close to Detroit Avenue as possible.

It is possible that the West 80s and 90s will improve with time. I personally find them too sketchy at the moment, although I do realize different people have different tolerance levels.

Heck, even Lakewood has experienced a rash of carjackings lately, along with other violent crimes. And not just along the suburb's "ghetto" East End. Personally, I still feel reasonably safe here, although I am more careful to keep my wits about me while walking around after dark.
