I must say, while Cleveland is #1 on my list of places to retire right now, if I was a young person fresh out of school, it would probably be my last choice for exactly this reason.

Sorry, folks! I generally try to be positive on this forum, but the main reason I left the Midwest to begin with was for economic reasons. The economy of the Midwest s-cks!

Unless you are a business owner that ships all over the U.S. CLE is a solid location. Besides teaching, I have a microfiber towel company that has been growing and this year, it's really growing. I could easily ship from CLE and many customers would lower their shipping rates. I already have a person to take over shipments from CAL so we'd have 2 locations.

Forbes seems to like to publish all kinds of lists that really don’t mean much. They apply to a limited part of the population but that’s about it. I can’t really speak for the employment situation in Cleveland since I have never had to look for a job here but I have seen discussions in the Retirement Forum where people post Forbes’ best lists to retire. Most people don’t see their choices as very realistic for a majority of people.

I’m sure there’s some merit to their research but I would take it all with a grain of salt.

I lost my 18 year office position and it took me six months to be hired for another one. A couple places told me they received more than 100 resumes.

6 months is a long time but I knew people who waited even longer in my home city. In Boston, 100 resumes is nothing. I've interviewed for positions in the past at places that have received over 200 resumes for the position because there are that many more people looking for jobs in East Coast cities like Boston.

Jobs are getting easier to find as long as you have a high school diploma, college, or a skilled trade. And as long as this country continues to uphold our immigration laws and crack down on illegal aliens this will only help future Job prospects in the future.

There is a misalignment of jobs and workers with the right skills to fill those jobs, in NE Ohio. There is a surplus of lower-skilled workers left over from when we had lots of manufacturing jobs. But we don't have enough higher-skilled STEM workers to fill the available positions.

For example, I was laid off from my job of almost 18 years on a Friday, (I knew it was going to happen...) and I had a new job by the end of the day, the following Monday.
