Hello:

I current live in a 1-bedroom with radiator heat, and am thinking of moving to a bigger place (duplex) with gas heating, for which the tenant is responsible.

On the average, how much are gas costs for 1 floor of a duplex, including stove and heating? I tried calling Dominion to get an average for an address for past service, but they won't tell you until you've signed a lease at that location.

I'm just looking for all ballpark average/estimate. Maybe the worst case scenario (in the winter). Thanks very much.

Is it possible to ask the other duplex occupant in a tactful manner? Say, "I'm considering leasing here and was trying to get a handle on total cost of occupancy for leasing, - can you share what your gas bill has been on average?"

It will depend on how much you use gas stove/ range / hot water and thermostat settings etc...

I would say worst case in cold months you may pay as much as $150-175 month for gas in an average 800 sf duplex. Note: gas cubic ft rates vary quite a bit.

I'd expect somewhere in the $100-$200 range in winter depending on your thermostat setting, the age/efficiency of the furnace, the insulation in the duplex, and the outside temps.

Keep in mind they offer a few different billing plans so you don't have to get slammed with high bills all of a sudden in winter.

Agree. Kind of impossible to answer. Could be as low as $80/mo in a well insulated home with a modern furnace. Could be as high as $150-$250. Not to mention prices went up recently so I think a lot of us aren't too sure what our bills will be looking like this winter.

In a duplex you also have to consider the neighboring unit. If it's an up/down duplex and you are on the top floor, you'll get some free heat rising up from below.

I paid between $85-105 per month last winter, bottom floor of a duplex. I also cook a lot.
