Headlands is a nice beach, granted there are some rocks, we're not advertising like its the Caribbean or Hawaii. But for the midwest, it is a great place to hang out and swim, as is Edgewater as long as you pay attention to Nowcast.

Cleveland Metropark's Edgewater beach and the Fairport Harbor Metroparks beach are regularly groomed/cleaned. Most of the time, except after heavy storms, both beaches have low bacterial counts.

Mentor Headlands is controlled by the State of Ohio, which does a bad job of maintaining the beach. That's why it's rocky as it's not regularly groomed, but Headlands is largely sand and it's ridiculous to say it's "as rocky as you can get." If you don't believe this check out the wild beaches at nearby Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve or at Lake Metroparks' Lake Erie Bluff, sometime in August or September when not underwater given the high current lake level.

Mentor Headlands, as it's not down current of the mouth of any river nor near a sewage treatment plant, typically has the cleanest water of Greater Cleveland beaches.

Unlike many Florida or Gulf Coast beaches, Cleveland's Lake Erie beaches aren't closed for long stretches due to Red Tide or other toxic algae. During bad Lake Erie toxic algal blooms in the western basin, sometimes there may be an elevated count at Edgewater or westward, but it typically is short-lived. Lake Erie toxic algal blooms are the consequence of very inadequate management of the Maumee River Basin agricultural industry, especially concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) by the State of Ohio and federal EPAs.

Edgewater hosts the popular Edgewater Live events and has an excellent bath house. Fairport Harbor has a break wall making it better for small children who could be knocked over by the waves at Mentor Headlands. Both Edgewater and Fairport Harbor have piers.

You say that you moved from Greater Cleveland 15 years ago and now apparently live in Charlotte, NC.

When was the last time you visited any of the Greater Cleveland beaches? Edgewater is much different since its takeover from the state by the Cleveland Metroparks.

It turns out the last time they were even downtown was prior to the completion of the Euclid Corridor project which I believe has now been up and running for almost 12 years. It's amazing how much old news people will continue to cling to in order to denigrate the city. Anymore, they just come off as completely ignorant.

It hasn't been there for very long. Maybe 1-2 years? I'm not sure, but it's a great place for lunch if you want something healthier. Good salads, soups, etc. but they also have burgers, other sandwiches, pastries, etc. A very solid lunch option just a block or so from the Terminal Tower. But, I mean, Rebol, Otani Noodle, Chipotle, Pizza Fire, Pizza 216, J. Gumbo's, Chocolate Bar, Potbelly, the entirety of E. 4th, the arcades, etc. are all also right there. Saying there's nowhere to have lunch around the square is just entirely ignorant.

You hit on something that absolutely drives me crazy -- those negative Clevelanders who sit in the far-out neighborhood or suburban area; shop at the malls or strip shopping and rarely if ever come into town (only if they have to, like jury duty), but yet strut around like their some kind of experts, harboring then perpetuating outdated, ignorant, negative views of the City to visitors (all the more egregious), even with all the progress that's happening here -- nobody thinks Cleveland is perfect by any stretch, but if you can't see the progress you're just being intentionally blind (aka being hard-headed). These folks just poison the atmosphere. Then when you even gently try and correct them, they often have a snarky comeback, ... ie "... well, why don't you get a job with the Chamber of Commerce." or something equally as stupid... There's one woman buddy who's like this -- been here for 20-plus years (and from Detroit of all places). We used to hang out when I came into town, but not so much these days. Nice lady, but simply annoying with that stuff (and I'm sure the feeling is mutual: my pro-Cleveland stance is equally annoying to her)...

For some of these folks (not my friend, though), I wish they would just shut the F up... or move and give us all some relief.

Mike & Dee's Diner in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Express reportedly also is good, especially for corned beef hash (much more convenient than Slyman's on St. Clair). Sadly, I haven't dined at any of the places you listed, nor Mike and Dee's.

When I worked downtown in the 70s and 80s, the only good casual places for lunch in the East 4th St. area were the Burger King on the corner of East 4th and Euclid and the original Otto Moser's on East 4th (it was wonderfully old-time Cleveland, smoke-filled with black-and-white pictures of famous entertainers and athletes on the walls).

I would expect that Heck's is hurting the business at Mike & Dee's.

BTW, it's definitely easier to find great corned beef hash in Cleveland than a good Polish Boy IMO!

I also haven't yet been to Wahlburgers on Ontario.

And there also are the Harry Buffalo and Flannery's Pub on East 4th St., and my favorite, Barrio Tacos in the 5th St. Arcades on Prospect Ave.

There's also a new Asian place in the new Beacon Tower and a Shake Shack adjacent to the Marble Room. It seems like something new opens up every couple of weeks.

Default Pho Thang Cafe

The Pho Thang Café is near East 9th St. and Rockwell. It's one of Cleveland's better Vietnamese restaurants. It's prices are competitive with the casual restaurants listed above.

Phở Thắng Café

I recently walked past J. Gumbo's and it appears to have closed.

Favorite places to eat downtown (where I can get a good meal for less than $10) include Shanghai Joe (Chinese) in Tower City and Indie's (Indian) in the 5th Street Arcades food court.

One of my roommates told me there is an Indian restaurant downtown with an all-you-can-eat buffet for $9.95, but I can't remember the name of it or where it's located.
