Hi everyone. I just wanted to ask what property taxes were like (A YEAR) in and around the NE Ohio area.

If you don't mind sharing personal experience (i.e. what you pay or your friends/family pays and city or county that they pay in) that would be great.

I hope I'm not being too nosy about it. I just didn't want someone to link me to a website with a bunch of numbers. I'd rather hear what people actually living in places are paying or have to say about the taxes in relation to other areas. Thanks everyone.

Our taxes for a city in a southern suburb of Cleveland are $2400/yr.
My parents pay $3700 & live in a westside suburb.
My brother & SIL pay about $3500 & live in a eastside suburb.

My parents home & ours are the same value.
My brother's home is double at $400k.
No rhyme or reason. Lots of different variables in every city. For example, Lakewood, OH is a very large suburb with a very large low-middle income population & has very high taxes averaging at about $3600/yr. Rocky River, which is next to it, has a very large wealthy population & a tremendous school system & lower taxes.

Well, it's not exactly Cleveland, but it is NE Ohio. I had a house in Niles, Ohio (century home, 2700 sq/ft) that the current owners are paying $527/half for, Niles also has a wage tax of 1%, but very cheap electric rates compared to other cities in the area.

My parents on the other hand live in a small town (6800 people) north of Youngstown and Warren called Cortland. The area is basically a bedroom community with good schools and it's is very desirable to people in this area. About 5 years ago when they lived in a 1530 sq/ft house on a corner lot (built in 1976), they paid a little over $800/half. Now they live in the same area, Bazetta Township in a 3,000 sq/ft, $300k+ custom home on almost an acre and they pay $2100/half. Their neighbors across the street in maybe a $250k home pay around $1900/half.

I know you didn't want a link to a website, but I couldn't help myself since I just found this today and it's incredibly useful:

Preoperty Tax 2007 - Business - cleveland.com

Play around with it for a bit and you should find everything you need.

so the taxes are based on the MARKET VALUE instead of the ASSESSED VALUE?
