This thread is for all news relating to Greater Cleveland (county) metroparks system. All five Greater Cleveland counties -- Cuyahoga (Cleveland), Lake, Lorain, Medina and Geauga--have county park systems. See posts 7 and 9 in this thread for details.

Headlands beach today, the waves were great.
Hidden Valley metropark (Lake County) Grand River

Rode the motorbike - great day to be out. Was really impressed with Hogback Ridge metropark in SE Lake County - great trail system, nice creeks.

Thanks for posting the pictures. However, the picture of Mentor Headlands Beach State Park was very disturbing. It's obvious from the picture that the state isn't raking the beach.

Several years ago, the Kasich administration tried to turn Headlands over to Lake Metroparks, just as they did with Cleveland area beaches, including Edgewater. Just as it did with Edgewater and the other Cuyahoga County beaches, Ohio now apparently is neglecting this great state asset located in Mentor, even though it's a Republican dominated city and county.

Cleveland Metroparks had to float a tax levy increase to pay for improvements at the Cuyahoga County parks acquired from Ohio and to pay for operations, even after a significant one-time payment from the state.

Headlands, much more than Edgewater, is used by residents from all over Ohio and certainly from outside Lake County, and Lake Metroparks already maintains a beach at nearby Fairport Harbor and several other lakefront properties in Lake County. Lake Metroparks didn't want to assume the substantial cost of operating and maintaining the large Headlands property.

Here's a little known privilege allowed at Headlands and other Ohio state beaches.

<<As with other state parks in Ohio, per Ohio Revised Code, both men and women are allowed to wear thong swimwear while women are allowed to be topless. It is highly discouraged since this is a family friendly atmosphere.[8]>>

I've never seen topless women at Headlands.

Default Brian Zimmerman marks 10 years as Cleveland Metroparks CEO

Brian Zimmerman, Cleveland Metroparks CEO, recently was interviewed by Freshwater Cleveland marking a decade as the system's CEO.

Here's a claim that I would like to see elaborated upon, and there perhaps is a report at the Cleveland Metroparks website.

https://www.freshwatercleveland.com/...ros072320.aspx

Otherwise, this was a very disappointing interview. E.g., there was no discussion of the COVID-19 epidemic's impact on Cleveland Metroparks operations.

The picture was taken at the extreme eastern end of the beach area, which is actually a nature preserve. You can swim there, however they may not be raking the beaches so as not to disturb the sand dune area.
Didn't see any topless women but I'll keep my eye out and camera-phone ready.

Combined Sewer Overflow into Lake Erie at Edgewater this morning.
https://www.cleveland.com/news/2020/...ay-storms.html

Somewhat ironic that human sewage is flowing into the beach on Labor Day, when families should be enjoying the beach.

Nonetheless, lots of good news here actually, as the $3B Project Clean Lake will essentially solve this problem in about 10 years. This effort, along with Akron's sewer project, will clean Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. With time, I expect reasonable compromise legislation to get farmers on board with fertilizer practices - to further reduce algae blooms.

Nothings cheap, our region is enduring significantly higher sewer bills, and farmers must adjust fertilizing practices.
Three cheers for the NEORSD

Cleveland, Lake, Lorain, Medina, and Geauga metroparks news-rockyriver_stairs.pngRocky River looking downstream towards the staircase to the top of the cliff. What a great day to be in the parks today. I like riding the bike (the one with 1200cc) downtown, then to Edgewater onto Clifton then to Rocky River. Then I take the parkway all the way back home - pretty awesome I can ride on the parkway from Lake Erie to CVNP and stay in the park the whole way.

Turning golf courses back into green spaces. Here's a collection of recent purchases and restoration.

1. Cleveland Metroparks: Acacia in Lyndhurst. What an awesome addition to the park system, in an area that sorely needed a metropark. So many families, older couples, singles make daily use of this resource with walking, hiking, and fishing opportunities.

2. Cleveland Metroparks: Bedford metropark purcasing Astorhurst golfcourse. Another fantastic addition to the park system. I have hiked this one several times in the last few months. Improvements include increasing the wetlands to parking. The trail system is mostly paved (the old golf cart roads) and offers great birding and views of the Tinkers Creek Valley.

3. Akron Metroparks (Summit County): Cascade Valley. This is a jewel of a park for many reasons. It connects multiple metroparks together as well as the CVNP. The geography is beautiful, rugged, and provides opportunities from whitewater to rugged hiking.

Lake Metroparks purchased two golf courses and kept them as golf courses. I never fully considered that this preserves permanently the open spaces. In the event that golf ever declines into oblivion, both of these golf courses could be converted to nice parks!
