Since the city of Cleveland actually manufactures more steel than Pittsburgh does, how about the Cleveland Steelers? Now THAT would be an amusing campaign.

Exactly. It evokes images of these toolbags and those who are (mostly 'were' about 30 years ago) like them:

I do like some of the names derived from history. But I don't know about the Commodores. I mean, the full name is fine, but it seems likely that it would be shortened to the "Cleveland Commies", and that might not go over well.
Commies >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rockers

The only other Athletic team I know that uses Commodores is Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN of the Southeastern Conference. Their team name was commonly shortened to the ‘Dores.

I kind of like Commodores as it is unique, rolls off the tongue easily and the graphics and logos could be very cool with the use of anchors, ships and other nautical ideas.

Creative sports writers, rivals, or disgruntled home fans will find a way to bastardize any team nickname into something derogatory. Commodores lends itself not only to the aforementioned “commies”, but also “commodes” (as in toilets), or “commoders” to invent a similar term.

That aside,, I actually think that’s a decent name with good possibilities for logos and such.

I don't think Commodores would be free of controversy unfortunately. There's a movement to rename O.H. Perry elementary school in Collinwood because Commodore Perry made racist remarks about black seamen who were sent to his fleet The Crime Writers' Chronicle: Racism and the War of 1812.

Let's go with the Cleveland "Inclusive" so everyone can feel good...or Cleveland Crayons so they can have LGBTQ color spectrum uniforms like old Astros .

I have come to like Cleveland Aces based upon the rich baseball history of quality pitchers (over time), and mixed with history of Cleveland Air Races. Use an aeronautical type imagery rockets/ jet plane.
(Also dovetails with history of flight John Glenn / Neil Armstrong / NASA presence in NE Ohio)

Others for fun:

Cleveland Blackjacks
Cleveland Captains
Cleveland Dirt Bags
Cleveland Dragsters
Cleveland Engines (nod to automotive production history) great way to annoy people thinking its "Injuns"
Cleveland Fellers (honor of Bob Feller)
Cleveland Grinders (in honor of the overused euphemism)
Cleveland Guardians
Cleveland Hammers
Cleveland Hot Rods (a nod to rich Automotive history)
Cleveland River Dragons
Cleveland Rock Grinders
Cleveland Saltminers
Cleveland Stampers (metal working history)
Cleveland Thunderbirds (the Thunderbird used to be assembled at Avon Lake Ford plant)
Cleveland Tugs

Weather / Nature / Animal themes:
Cleveland Hound Dogs
Cleveland River Rats
Cleveland Spider Bats (like better than Spiders)
Cleveland Thunderclouds
Cleveland Thunderstorm
Cleveland Tornado
Cleveland Vortex

Don't care for the musical theme names nor avian names (since best are used so often in sports) The local Quidditch team has best musical name (Riff) Moondogs could be another, and the "Buzzards" seems a reach.

My opinion.
Grays or Greys is awful. No one remembers that. I'm older and I don't. We already get regularly **** on because Cleveland is "grey 6 months of the year".
I don't like Rockers although I like the person's point that said we could put a stage out there and maybe have bands or better yet, promote some local bands. Give them a few songs before the game or whatever. From a marketing Cleveland stand point that would be a good idea, actually. But "Rockers..." ew.... just don't like it. Maybe something else music related.
Guardians I am neutral on. I could be ok with that.
I'm actually ok with Spiders too because I can only imagine how this town would dress up as Spiders for games n stuff. And it is pretty unique. Don't know many teams called that.
I loved Indians and was always proud of that name.

and arguing over ROCK and whether its dying or not? LUDICROUS.
I've heard some dumb things said on these forums before....

Just because you don't hear it on the radio, pops, doesn't mean it's gone.
It's alive and well. One of my current favorites: remember Cindy Lou Who from the Grinch? She's all growed up now.... and ROCKING.

I guess I'm ludicrous!

The "Rockers" would be the worst, most clicheed and terrible marketing I can imagine.

We are not even really a rock city. If you know people in the local music scene, this is generally very well accepted.

I like the Aces, Engines, and Thunderbirds.

I think my favorite so far is the Engines, gives that rough, raw, heavy metal vibe that works for us.

I was trying to work in the 351 Cleveland (most famous engine built at Brookpark) but couldn't find a name that worked well.
