These fights are happening throughout the region and the entire nation. The GOP is running on a nearly empty tank of petty grievances.

As well as some not so petty grievances. In the news is the recent (10/25/21) withdrawal of the Ohio State School Board Association from membership in the National School Board Association (NSBA) over the controversy created by the NSBA's request to the Biden administration to use the FBI to investigate and prosecute parents who have been voicing opposition to certain policies of the States' and National Departments of Education; and, not just to investigate but to investigate on the grounds of "suspected and/or known terrorists."
Further complicating things is the undisputed allegation that the current Attorney General Merrick Garland endorsed the NSBA letter, which included charges of "domestic terrorism and hate crimes," and reportedly affirmed that the [NSBA] letter was sent on behalf of state associations and school board members across the nation.” According to the Ohio State School Boards Association, OSBA “This assertion could not be further from the truth.”
These issues elevate the disagreements above the suggested category of "petty," and serve to highlight issues that strike at the very heart of American public education, a field that has, in recent years, itself become a hotbed of politicized policies and power plays aimed essentially at assigning full power & authority of education to partisan political entities who have been increasing regarded as ideologically driven, as opposed to being grounded in sound educational practices. (NH, La,Mo, and Pa state associations have also withdrawn.

Out of curiosity, I checked both the school systems in Ohio my kids attended. Sensibly, neither have mask mandates, except while riding the bus. They let parents decide what is best for their own children. What a concept.

I have lived in a place which chose to wipe out the entire school board and replace the board members with parents of current students. I don’t remember what the issues were at the time, but I do know when parents get their dander up, action can and does happen.

People who threaten elected board officials should be rounded up, charged, and incarcerated with the rest of the domestic terrorists. For sure.

The distorted public impression the NSBA intended to create; namely, that concerned parents represent a danger to school board members, is exactly the reason now some 27 states have expressed condemnation of the NSBA letter to federal law enforcement. In fact, the school boards themselves fueled the adversarial relationship by refusing to permit parents to speak, cutting short the 15 minutes set aside for public comment, and making it clear that no matter what the parents had to say, the school boards were not interested in hearing it.
As we recall, teachers and school administrators pushed the parents to the point of exasperation with harrassment techniques such as making them wait outside in the parking lots and singling out their children for reprisal. By the time videos of the school board meetings hit the You Tube circuit, it had already reached a point of no return, but it was obvious early on that the school boards' positions were, essentially, "We are in charge, and what we say is what goes." By taking this stance, the boards only managed to convince the parents and the public that a deeper agenda was at work, that their own kids were being used as pawns.
When did the trouble start? That's debatable. Education reform has been a topic now for over fifty years. It reminds me of the family situation where a couple has reached deadlock and are now taking it out on the kids. What would the marriage counselor have to say?

I thought boards were in charge, and what they say goes. If not, I am not sure what the purpose of boards are.
