Hi all,
We made the big move from the West Coast to Cleveland area, and we’re excited! We’re looking at some month-to-month rental options (furnished) while we conduct a home search over the next several (?) months.

There are some good options for what, in normal times, might be considered “corporate housing” in the Downtown area...ie., furnished, month-to-month lease options. Specifically on Prospect and E. 14th Street, just on the fringe of Playhouse Square.

We drove through the area and looks very cool. Even with a tamed-down experience due to theater closures, take-out restaurants, etc., the area looks appealing for getting our feet wet for a few months in the heart of the city, before home purchase.

Area appears to be reasonably safe, assuming the usual common sense measures for big city living. Am I right?

With all due discretion, I must ask for local opinions on the prospect for unrest over the coming months due to 1) Chauvin trial in MN, 2) anniversary of the horrific incident leading to last year’s protests/unrest. I ask only because I understand this specific area took some damage last year.

Our other options would be furnished rental homes which are available in Cleveland Heights or University Heights areas, in nice residential neighborhoods. Good options also, but the Downtown idea has us intrigued.

Again, this is meant to be short term, 3-6 months or so.

Glad to be here!

Thanks!

I used to live at Playhouse Square, it is a fine area. Really nothing to worry about. Nothing wrong with CH or UH, but I definitely recommend living downtown at least initially so you have easy access to explore the whole area. Going right to the Heights will kinda silo you in the Heights. Being downtown lets you experience all of Cleveland easily.

No clue about unrest, but I really hope not. Downtown cannot handle it again. FWIW we had one night of rioting, which compared to a lot of other major cities was nothing. Playhouse Square was damaged all down Euclid Ave last year and it was a very ugly event. I doubt anything happened up at 14th and Prospect though. It's kinda just out of the way enough.

Due to the changed political environment, I think the odds for massive protest is lower - not zero, its lower though. Cleveland is really not a hotbed for political unrest, nonetheless, as Bjimmy24 noted, we had a very uncharacteristic protest that damaged a lot of businesses last May/June (I think it was.) I would live downtown.

Thanks folks for the insights...it is appreciated. Turns out our primary downtown choice had already leased out the unit that had piqued our interest. So we’ll scout some alternatives in the vicinity. If that doesn’t work, it’s over to CH or UH.

Glad to hear your endorsement of Downtown. My wife and I were impressed with the area.

Best regards

EDIT - we found another possible option in Warehouse District downtown (lofts), so we’ll tour that unit tomorrow. Thanks!

This thread might help you out. It may be dated in its advice given the epidemic impact. Certainly check out downtown trolley routes and schedules and whether you may need RTA monthly passes to explore transit-friendly areas of Cleveland.

For the benefit of future posters, please provide an assessment of the market once you've leased a place, including rent ranges.

Cleveland leaders were shocked by the spring riot, and admit that they were unprepared. It seems that much of the damage was done by a relatively small number of looters, etc.

The city, county and state police authorities have said that they won't be caught flat-footed again if another incident seems likely. Before the May 30 riot, Cleveland hadn't experienced, to my knowledge, a significant riot since the late 1960s, and those riots were not downtown.

I also suspect that the American Rescue Act just passed by Congress with its very large stimulus payments to persons living in poverty, combined with a likely post-epidemic economic recovery, will greatly ameliorate tensions. With an African American mayor and police chief, Cleveland isn't exactly a hotbed of racial hostility compared to Minneapolis, Portland, and perhaps some other American cities.

The NFL draft remains on schedule for April 29 downtown, and fans once again will be allowed into Progressive Field when the Indians kick off their MLB season. So downtown, barring a spike in variant infections, may begin its long recovery shortly. Unfortunately, Cleveland's downtown restaurant scene, especially on East 4th St., has suffered some serious losses.

Heinen's rotunda prepared foods operation, wine bar, etc., likely will reopen in the months ahead.

If considering the Warehouse District, certainly familiarize yourself with the East Flats, if you haven't already done so.

If you aren't yet vaccinated, consider carefully the advisability of living downtown, using residential elevators, dining indoors, etc.

Will do so. We’ll end up paying a premium for fully furnished, plus short-term lease flexibility. I’ll cite that.

As usual, thanks for the link with the wealth of info!

Always entertaining to read varying perspectives (in your link). FWIW, downtown Cleveland looks pristine compared to what I just left a few days ago in Portland.

Just a tip. Although you've missed Maple Weekends, call Lake Metroparks Farmpark and ask if they'll be operating the sugar bush there this weekend. The immediate weather is ideal for syrup flow, so it's a possibility. The Farmpark is a wonderful visit in the spring to see all of the newborn animals. The Farmpark reportedly is one of the best in the U.S.

Similarly, perhaps call the Geauga County visitors' bureau and ask if any of the county's several sugar bushes are open to the public this week.

The Burton Log Cabin sugar house may be operating, especially this coming weekend.

Ditto, Holmes County. There's a good chance in eastern Holmes County that you will find Amish using horse-drawn plows to prepare their fields for planting.

March is a wonderful time in Greater Cleveland, and April offers fantastic opportunities as well (incl. Holden, Daffodil Hill at Lake View Cemetery).

If you haven't seen it yet, the James A. Garfield Memorial reopens April 1 (confirm given the epidemic). Lake View is adjacent to Little Italy if you want to dine after a visit. Bring binoculars.
