I am student transfering to the cleveland institute of art next semester. And I have been reading a lot of threads about the area but I still don't have an idea of how dangerous it is.
I lived in downtown philly for a while so it's not that I am unfamiliar with it. But i'd like to know some more details about that specific area surrounding the school.

Is it unsafe to walk around during daylight?
tips for safety?
etc

I'd say it's probably one of the safer areas of Cleveland proper, almost like its own bubble. The Cleveland Clinic, University Circle, and Case Western Reserve University all have their own police forces which are constantly patrolling the area.

Don't stray too far north on Euclid Ave. and you'll be fine.

There's a police car every five minutes (CPD, University Circle Police, CWRU Police)--you almost feel like you're doing something wrong with such a high police presence. CIA also borders the Little Italy neighborhood, which is pretty safe. To the north is a little rough as well as towards East Cleveland.

Plus if you've lived in downtown philly, you'll be more than fine. At most, yuo'd just need common sense and any basic street smarts.

They should brief you during orientation, but don't count on it. Your fellow students will have a good feel where you can and cannot go. I wouldn't recommend going past the rapid station to the east or MLK to the west on Euclid. Up Mayfield is Murray Hill Road, which is fine.

I know a few people who have been held up there, but overall its pretty safe as compared to other areas. Like one of the previous posters said, don't stray off too far though.

What all the other posters said so far is right and good advice. Over there it is kind of like "a bubble" (of lower crime and its nicer) all the way from The Cleveland Clinic to University Circle. Just be sure to not stray too far off because as close as a 1/4 mile north and south of that area are some of the highest crime areas in the city.

Think of it as a bubble of relative safety. There are some decidely bad areas relatively near so dont stray.

I've lived in Cleveland Heights 33 yrs, 43 y/o... the whole area which you are referring to is very safe. Don't go past the Free clinic...you'll end up in East Cleveland...not safe, don't go any further than 79th and Euclid...not real safe, University Circle is pretty safe...practice safety 101 don't look like you're afraid of people but don't act as if you've never been around people...that is...unless you haven't

Additionally, I should add that it's safe to travel towards downtown Cleveland by car. Take Chester from University Circle and you'll be there in a snap.
