Is Amherst a good place to live? We need an area with good schools, would prefer public schools but private okay.

I looked at the sales and it looks like a lot of homes for sale but not many are selling. Is this area going through a recession too? Wasn't sure how this effects the schools/property values.

I grew up in Amherst and my parents and one of my sisters still live there. It is a very nice town and a great place to raise a family. The schools are exceptional... the public schools are better than most private schools in the South (I see you are from Houston).

Depending on what your profession is, you can't really say in Amherst has been hit by the recession. Adjacent to Amherst is Lorain, Vermilion, & Elyria. Lorain & Vermilion have been severely affected by the closing of the Ford plant. Elyria is also very blue-collar, but I am not too familiar with it's situation. Many people move to Amherst and commute to Cleveland because you get much more house for your $$ and the property taxes are significantly cheaper than the Cleve. subarbs.

To sum it up, I would recommend Amherst for schools, amenities, location, etc. There's really no reason for me not to recommend it other than the commute (approx. 35) to Cleveland - if that is where you work.

Good luck with your search and move!

[color="Black"]I moved from the East side of Cleveland about 4 years ago. What a difference! Amherst is forever home to me now. The nicest people, great markets, almost farm community, friendly atmosphere wherever you go.....I'll never move. The Amherst Community is a very tight group and support their schools, city and seniors well. Amherst is very close to freeway and turnpike access yet, comfort living. For being a small community, unlike the large metropolis I was use to, it has everything and more than you could ask for. If I was raising a family this is one city I would prefer for a multitude of reasons. The old Amherst folks (most are gone now) but the the relatives still living here continue the traditions and respect the city deserves. I am a very happy to call Amherst home. I hope you are too.[color="Black"]

Amherst is definitely a good community with great public schools (one of the best in the state).

Amherst is a nice area. If you are considering Lorain County, you might also like Avon and Avon Lake. Schools rate very well here.

Avon is kind of in a class by itself when thinking about the recesion. Avon is BOOMING, like an explosition of growth over the last 3 years and there is no signs of stopping. Housing and shopping popping up everywhere. It's right on the border of Cuyahoga County so you get the benefits without the taxes.
