Ok, since some people cannot grow up, and have to go way off topic on a lot of things, the one thread "a dying city" has now been closed.

This is a new thread. Please talk about all of Cleveland's problems. But also talk about the good. You can talk about the bad as well, every big city has it's bad problems. But, the thread title is a lot better. Cleveland is on the rebound, and there are a lot of great new projects in the city's future, including the new convention center/medical mart which will be one of the few in the country.

So please, we will re-continue the previous thread, but we will also talk about the good too. Stay on topic too!

Lets start from the ashes here...

Cleveland's new convention center/medical mart is a huge new topic in Cleveland that has been making the headlines for months. They cannot decide where they want to build the center, and there are three sites currently. On the mall by the lakefront, the riverfront behind Tower City, or on the river by the Flats District. They need to hurry up and decide soon, I am getting tired of when and where it will be built.

well the jacobs group no longer owns a stake in key tower, sold it a real-estate company in georgia. not really sure if this is a good thing or not. maybe jacobs will get working on a new skyscraper (or maybe thats just wishful thinking)

Jacobs Group no longer owns stake in Key Center -

I also realize there is MUCH more to city development than high rises. I'm very much looking forward to the revitalization of the east bank of the flats, rendering on that look amazing. There is also a number of luxury condo's/lofts in the works. very nice if you can afford them, but i would like to see a few more apartment complexes for the rest of us.

here's a link from the city on most of the development approved/under construction

here's another, not from the city, with detailed renderings and pictures

I am fairly certain that the Mall Site is the site where they are going to build it and everything is moving forward. Just because Dan Gilbert says he wants it near his proposed casino, and the Plain Dealer decides to make a big deal of that, doesn't take away from the fact that it is going to be built on Mall C.

The Flats East Bank does look great! I just hope that they can get underway soon. They got site prep done months back, but with the economy, like many large projects around the world, has went on hold. I am sure though that it will get underway. With the new convention center/med mart and the Flats East Bank, it will really change the skyline from the lake views. I know in the Flats East Bank there is 3 proposed high rise towers, and I also was reading a few months ago about a 21 story tower possibly going up on Public Square. I think the Jacobs group had some say in it, maybe not, I can't exactly remember.

Hey, it was the Jacobs group!

Even though the article is almost a year old, the Jacobs group has left Key Tower, and could possibly go with its new ideas for the new tower.

The CC/MM itself won't change the skyline, but spinoff hotels and other development may. Some people (including Dan Gilbert) are complaining that the convention center will be underground at the Mall Site. Have they ever seen above-ground convention centers? They are ugly behemoths which add nothing to street life as they take up multiple whole city blocks and there are no destinations for the entire length of their walls (see Pittsburgh's convention center). Out of all things that are perfect to place underground to free up green space or space for other development, a convention center is a prime candidate.

The thing that cracks me up the most above the people arguing for the Tower City site when they complain about the Mall Site being underground is that Tower City itself is an underground mall.

The best thing about Cleveland are a lot of the people, the weather in the height of summer, and the multitude of little towns in and around the big city. I happen to love Tremont, Shaker Square and Coventry, Rocky River as placed to visit. Simply canceling my subscription to the Plain Dealer and choosing to ignore the things that do not affect my day to day living (Medical Mart, crime around clubs at 2am, demolishment of East bank with no investors at the ready, vacancies in office buildings, etc), makes me feel much better about the area. Sadly, the things I like about the area have arisen in spite of - and not because of - the workings of the downtown.

Housing prices, which already more affordable than most of the other mid to large metros in the US, are declining at a slower rate than the other mid to large metros. I know the entire country is in a recession right now but Cleveland is much better off than most in the sense that the economy of the past decade was not based on the Ponzi scheme of unsustainable housing growth rates.

Hopefully the best and the brightest among those who left Cleveland will return and bring their brains, innovation, and entrepreneurship with them.
