Just to tell people who arent from around Cleveland, dont think the crime has just recently got bad in Cleveland, its been a really rough city for a long time. Cleveland has always been a rough city and has had a very high poverty rate for at least the past 30 years. People keep saying that most crimes in the city besides murder are down, but they dont realize noone calls the cops anymore, or they never show up, for property crimes, and a lot of other crimes. Ask people who live in the city and a lot of people will tell you noone calls the cops for lesser crimes, and if they do the cops never come.

If anyone looked at the city-data page for Cleveland, OH recently then you will notice that they have the number of murders messed up for the year of 2006. It says that Cleveland only had 75 murders in 2006, when i reality we had 119 murders. Also it says the crime rate is 860, if they add the other murders in that, then the crime rate would be closer to 1000, which is at a level close to St. Louis, or Detroit. If anyone wanted to know, so far this year Cleveland has had 110 murders, which is about 11 murders per month. The deadliest months of the year are December, and i think August. So if the rate continues we should see about 12 murders in November, and 16 or more in December, which is a total of 138 murders. Lets just hope it doesnt get that high.

Jeeze, I don't see how the mayor can sit around and continue the same old policies. Something radical needs to be done.

Cle440, Yea i know about the 75 it says. I wrote them a message about making it 119 for 2006. What do you think about Toledo, going from like 35 down to I think 11 this year?

It says 75 murders because the FBI says so

City of Cincinnati, OH Pop 309,104 Total violent crime 3,766 Murders 89
City of Cleveland 452,759 7,004 75
City of Columbus 731,547 5,948 104

It is also important to look at the average crime rate for the entire metropolitan area since small cities that are >75% urban (Cleveland, Buffalo, Atlanta, Minneapolis) often have suburbs that make up for the centralized crime while large cities whose city limits include more residential areas (Indianapolis, Columbus, Los Angeles, Las Vegas), will look like they have lower crime but in fact have a similar rate in the urban centers.
Columbus Metro Pop 1,710,708 Rate per 100,000 inhabitants VC 426.3 Murders 6.6
Cincinnati 2,076,054 Rate per 100,000 inhabitants 364.7 5.9
Cleveland 2,128,904 Rate per 100,000 inhabitants 459.7 4.7

As white flight continues in many cities and the suburbification of many of these cities with small, urban centers continues, crime within the city limits themselves will continue to rise. The way to combat this is through gentrification that cities like New York and Chicago have undertaken, infusing money and success into depressed areas. The bottom line is that police will protect those whom they feel they NEED to protect. That is more likely a new development of 3 million dollar yuppie condos in a revitalized urban area than a row of decaying shacks in a "ghetto". The economy fuels this kind of rebirth with high paying jobs creating demand for this kind of development. Don't expect the crime to improve until the economy does. Don't read too much into urban crime, Cleveland has exceptionally safe suburbs.
All statistics are obtained from the FBI official report for 2006.

Why would the FBI Report say that Cleveland only had 75 when it had 119 murders? I checked the numbers for Detroit, Cincinnati, and Columbus and all of their numbers are right, Cleveland is the only one thats messed up. For a city of Toledos size to only have 11 murders is crazy, thats actually considered safe. Akron had 18 murders so far, and Columbus and Cincinnati are both around 60 something i think. Cleveland is the only city in Ohio doing really bad right now with about 114 murders.

Default Off by 44 ?

cleveland.com: Everything Cleveland

The Columbus Dispatch - Local/State
"Homicides in Cincinnati topped its 2005 total of 79 by early December. By yesterday, the number had risen to 85, the most victims since police started keeping reliable records in 1950. Cleveland homicides have risen from 78 in 2004 to 109 in 2005 to, as of Saturday, 119 in 2006, the deadliest year in a decade, according to FBI and local statistics." Taken from the second link.

I'm not saying it's 100 % wrong that Cleveland only had 75 in 2006, but I must ask why all of these other sources say differently, and why is the 75 off by such a relatively high number. 44 is a big stretch 4 would be understandable. Perhaps there is conspiracy to make Cleveland look worse then it is by these other sources, but I doubt that. Chances are the FBI report from the link that Thompson provided is off.

I am a stats person. I love facts. and I think it's important to be as factual as possible, especially when it comes to seeing negative trends in society so that we can move towards fixing those problems.

Everyone have a nice day.

Maybe there were 75 murders within the city limits of Cleveland, and the other 44 were in the area, but not within the city? Or do the sources already take that difference into account?
