I've lived in Pittsburgh since 2010 and never really understood why something as trivial as sports would create such a disdain between residents of two cities. In the broader sense Pittsburgh and Cleveland really need to start working more towards that "Cleveburgh" mega-region goal where both areas share talent, resources, ideas, strategies, etc. There are certain things Cleveland kills Pittsburgh in (i.e. efficient transit) while Pittsburgh kills Cleveland in other areas (i.e. large number of vibrant walkable neighborhoods).

I don't think the rivalry is too serious, nor do I think it's a bad thing to have a rival. Competition is good in a lot of ways; when you're always trying to out-do someone else, that means you're always improving in some way. But you're right, we shouldn't be opposed to cooperation, just don't expect Browns fans to start hugging Steelers fans any time soon..

Pittsburgh does not "kill" Cleveland in that category, in my opinion. "Kill" is way too dramatic a word. Nor does Cleveland really "kill" Pittsburgh in transport, though I do think it's better.

Have you lived in America long? Sports rivalries are everywhere, and they're not actually a bad thing. Non-sports fans like to overanazlyze them and make themselves look more "civilized" by criticizing them, but for 95% of everyone, the rivalries are just for fun. OSU-Michigan is fun. I went to Ohio State. Do I actually hate Michigan or people from Michigan? No. But it's freakin fun to be at that game, and it's fun to talk smack. Same thing for Cleveland-Pittsburgh, New York-Boston, etc.
